So I pulled the trigger on a 96 base model poverty spec'd single cable 4cyl 5spd taco. 128k miles, but the body has been through the ringer. Who ever owned this truck previously was either shitfaced 24/7 or had cataracts!

Interior is clean, thankfully. I haven't seen any oil dripping to the ground, but noticed a bit on the bottom side of the truck. The PO claimed it was the valve cover which he tightened back down.

My real concern right now was when I was checking the radiator I could tell it had some build up of what I assume is rust. Sticking my finger down into the radiator and it feels like it is caked on inside. When I squeeze the top radiator hose it feels like a bag of chips.

Assuming the system needs a proper flush and all hoses should be replaced? Should I just do the top and bottom radiator hoses, or are there other hoses that should also be replaced?

FWIW the truck drives GREAT and the AC works great. Should be a good daily driver once I get a few small things addressed.

I'd replace the vacuum hoses. I just replaced the ones in my truck, and it made a significant difference in acceleration and braking. Also, whenever I buy a vehicle, I "base line" maintenance items, such as:

    1. full tune up: replace spark plugs, wires, clean MAF and throttle body, fuel filter and air filter.
2 Replace fluids: engine, tranny, differentials, if 4WD; I'd replace the transfercase fluid, coolant, brake fluid and power steering fluid.
    3. Check pads condition, if too low, replace.

    Good luck!

LOL. I know how you feel about neglect. I think the previous owner of my truck liked to river fish. Scratches and dents all over. I am in the process of repairing. Practicing my PDR.

The bag of chips radiator hose needs to be looked at to see what the "chips" are. Then go from there. Rust flakes.....may mean the truck sat for a long time with out coolant (just water) or inadequate coolant mixture. Anyways, a full cooling system flush is in order.

Yes, flush it!!! It's that time of the year when you will need some heat inside the cab so make sure the heater is turned all the way to the max so it can be cleaned out.
