Ten to fifeteen minutes of idling every morning won't put that much extra wear on an engine. Least the engine will be slightly warmed up, so it won't take as long to heat up the cab

LOL As of right now, my truck has a killer Pioneer sound system, a Sony touch-screen head unit with Bluetooth and a backup camera, dashcams front and rear, and custom rims. This is in addition to everything it came from the factory with, including A/C, tilt/telescope steering column, automatic transmission, etc...

Now it's looking like it's gonna have fog lights too!

My truck still does not have intermittent windshield wipers, and that's the one thing I dislike about it!

Armor can help, but it can also hurt. It won't absorb damage like stock, instead it can transfer the energy that would be absorbed down to the frame.
Best thing to do is install dash cam, and if you are feeling peppy you can install a rear facing.

    Completely unnecessary.
I wake up to 9* mornings in winter.

    Start it and drive.

10-15 minutes of no load is a LOOONG warmup where 20-30% more fuel is being used due to it being cold which literally washes the cylinders of your engine of oil.

it would probably take 30+ min of idiling in single digit temps to get a motor to close to operating temps.... and about 2 minutes of driving under light load....

Modern vehicles are designed to "accordian" on impact for your safety.
Off-roading protection is different than avoiding traffic accident damage.
    Choose wisely.

It can get a whole lot colder than that here. only sensible way to get frost off inside of windows is to warm up the cab.

You can get remote starters under $50. i got 2 button one on a black friday for $40 at CanadianTire and it works great. does everything i wanted it to. locks/unlocks doors and starts the truck.

I am curious about the longevity of A/C system components...

I specifically ask about 2005 models because that is the first year of the 2nd generation.

The reason I ask because one of the most important things to me in any vehicle is ICE COLD A/C. I like summer more than winter, and I have no problem walking around for hours in the heat at car shows. However, at the end of the day, one of those things I look forward to is getting in my truck, cranking up the A/C, and being able to relax somewhat on the drive home. The same is true for driving home from work. I work as a bar-back, personal assistant, and "utility guy" at a bar/music venue that has a patio and outdoor bar. I spend hours running around in the heat, but as long as I have access to water, I'm fine. Again, cranking up the A/C, and being able to relax somewhat on the drive home is one of those moments I truly covet and look forward. The same is true for driving home from work. My truck is a 2010 model purchased new in late 2009. I'm at about 69,400 miles as of this posting. The A/C has NEVER been serviced and puts out 41°F at the vents. Every year I wonder if I'll ever need to recharge it, but every year when I turn on the A/C for the first time (typically in March or April because we will have one or two days over 85°F before May), it is still finger-numbingly and nipple-hardeningly cold. I've heard stories from other Tacoma owners about having to recharge the A/C or replace the compressor in it's entirety.

While in Malibu, California for a family reunion, I met a guy who had a 2005-2007 (I forget what year) Toyota Tacoma and was fishing for sharks along the Pacific Coast Highway. His Tacoma was virtually identical to mine, aside from the fact that it was older and a stick shift. It was the same color and everything. This Tacoma was unfortunately very beat up, the victim of numerous hit and runs and a drunk driver. If I remember correctly, the owner only had liability insurance on the truck and could not afford to pay out of pocket to fix it. The odometer reading at the time was somewhere in the range of 103,000 to 130,000. The truck was in perfect mechanical condition and according to the owner always passed the California smog check with flying colors. The one thing not working on the truck despite it's rough condition was the air-conditioner. The owner said it had leaked refrigerant and he just never bothered to fix it because of the mild L.A. weather.

I ran a Carfax on a random 2006 Tacoma 2.7L regular cab 2WD I saw somewhere, and in the report it said the A/C had been recharged when the truck was about 5 years old.
