Paint Match

Took my Inferno to the dealer to have front bumper molding replaced and/or touched up (minor off road scratches and dents) and he mentioned difficulty of getting a correct paint match and that the whole bumper and surrounding area 'may' need to be faded/blended depending on the match. Not being much of a body man, is this true?? He said something about standard of paint varies greatly. So there is no paint QA done by Toyota?? Please advise. Thanks!!

 

It doesn't match the truck to begin with.
Tell them to make it as good as it was, and that will be fine

That is correct. Park the truck in the sun, open up a beer and stand there looking at it untill you notice it. Then do the same thing with your neighbors car, you will notice the same thing.
bumpers are a different substrate, painted off the vehicle, in a completely different area. It's a different shade. It never matched, and it never will, on any car, anywhere, ever. Brand new car or a bumper that's been painted. It has Nothing to do with QA

That said, if you're just wanting to replace the front mounding under the license plate, and a guy is telling you that he need to not only paint that, but also the bumper and blend the fenders to get a decent color match, he needs to get a new painter.

Speaking of paints, today I touched up a few self-caused scratches on the inner fenders under the hood. I have a Magnetic Grey Metallic truck, and used this paint:

The result is not just good - it is stupid good. It looks factory and I would never believe that area was painted had I not done it myself. Oh, and I did this outside at -3C temperature. In warm temps this paint will probably make you breakfast.

 

Why were you outside in -3 temps?!

 

No garage to work in. I'm in a condo, and the strata isn't all too happy about me working on my truck in the parking lot, so I've got to do 99% of the stuff outdoors. Pain. In. The. Ass.
