I have 140,000 miles on the Tacoma and want to drain the trans fluid. Some are trying to talk me out of the "flush" due to it causing additional problems by others in the past.
A simple drain only removes possibly half the fluid, if I am correct?

Has anyone had problems down the road when a "flush" was performed?

Simple drain only removes about 3-31/2qts.
I flushed mine at 80k, took 14-15qts, I'm at 130k now with no problems.

Depends, have you ever flushed it before? Are you willing to risk your transmission for a flush? Manufacturers recommends at 70k if I'm not mistaken?

It's never been changed out. Risk transmission for a flush??? Are there known failures due to flushing?

Lots of opinions on this. Just make if you do.... make sure the person doing it knows exactly what they are doing! "Can" doesn't = "will" but again lots of opinions on this.

I'm not saying you will lose gears, we have a rule in our shop, if you haven't done regular flushes per manufacturers recommendation we won't do a flush. If you're not having any problems, you probably have nothing to worry about but there is always that chance that you could lose a couple of gears.

@Red09Tacoma here's the thing changing fluids keeps stuff tidy and clean and is always a good idea. Flushes are a different animal whether you are talking radiator, motor, or tranny. There are some who believe rightly or wrongly that a flush could losen Sediment etc and so on. Truth is if it is done correctly with the correct equipment you should have no trouble. There are correct ways and incorrect ways . Tranny flushes are something I would Only trust the dealership to complete because if it mucks it up - there is a higher probability they will back it up (not always) and from what I have read is exactly why Indie shops and even dealerships don't prefer to perform that work if it is already past recommended time. Cause then they get into a pissing match over whether it was the flush or very well could have been the owners fault for neglect and abuse/heavy use.

Thanks for the info. When re-filling the trans, why couldn't you fill from the overflow opening rather? I plan on just draining it rather than a flush. I purchased the filter/strainer and new gasket.

I read a ton about this, and found that MOST not all people agreed with my notion that new fluid is better than old fluid, and that you probably arent going to hurt anything by doing a full flush if you are over the maintenance schedule.
