Guess not. Yeah I'll take the filter out of the clamshell thing and just rinse it down. For me and my setup it's real easy and takes about 5-10 mins depending on how much it's gathered.

 

So when I tried taking the lid off it wasn't coming off

How long do you keep motor off before you open lid
Is your lid hard to open
Does it release some air when you open lid

 

I filter clean twice a year, once in September after the swim season and once in march right before the swim season. Most likely your filter does not need to be cleaned if it was done in august. Back wash, most likely

No, not the skimmer basket. That I just change out a fine skinlike filter that goes over it, but those can be rinsed too.

 

I'll turn the motor off and wait maybe 5 mins. The lid is a bit older but I can easily take it off, it has a twist able valve like a pressure cooker.

I'm not that good at explaining things lol. Well at least when it comes to pool terminology.

 

Is your filter a pleated cylindrical paper type cartridge? Or is it a multiple "leaf" shaped element?

 

If you are having trouble taking the filter lid off, first try doing it with the air bleed valve open to relieve pressure. This is a small, petcock style valve directly below the pressure gauge. Do this with the pump OFF. If it still won't budge even with the relief valve open, close the valve, put the clamshell ring back on the filter (not tight enough that it compresses it back together, but not loose enough to allow the whole thing to come apart) and trigger the motor for only a second. This will give enough pressure to pop the seal and allow you to take the filter cap off.

EDIT: I should emphasize that this is NOT something that needs to be done right now since your water clarity is good.

Taking that class someone recommended, what do you think ?

Since its winter and I don't need to use pool till April, just cleaning it weekly (removing leaves) and cleaning the skimmer basket is enough for now ?

And scrubbing the sides with the brush

 

Six hours seems like a long time for your size of pool. You could probably get away with 4 or less in the winter when it's not being used. Also, as someone else mentioned, it might be a good idea to change the time to run at night during the lowest freezing temperatures to prevent your equipment from freezing and breaking.

Taking classes can never hurt. Knowledge is power.

Brushing the sides and scooping out the leaves might be fine if you don't normally get a lot of dirt blowing in. Make sure you stay up on the chlorine and pH levels. The chlorine tablets go in the blue topped floater with the twist lock cap.

Me too. Did that while in college. Worked for a pool store for 4 years and serviced them on the side. Service, openings and closings on all pools and spas.
