I've noticed a lot of threads on the Pro. 5 months into the production run and some peeps are still waiting. However, a number of us have our Pros.

I thought it might be good to create a thread for known issues, tips, tricks and mods. Basically, all things '17 Tacoma TRD PRO. What's working...and what isn't.

Zerks not lubed? Condensation in the headlights? Truck has zero issues? Dealer charging higher than MSRP? Located a '17 PRO someone might be looking for? What mods do you have or are planned?

I'll start: Sales process? SUCKED. The sales lead at my dealer? Awful. Nice kid but...Parts and Service have been some what better. Dealer take off of the OEM rack left a scratch on the roof. Sales dood hands were shaking from how nervous he was when I found it on inspection. That was the least painful part of the sales process...

Finally finished the first round of upgrades for 2017. New shoes, Gobi rack finally on and lots of future love planned for what my wife calls "your new girlfriend". Damn I love her (the wife).

Truck has been 100%. Love this thing. No issues noticed, so far. Upgraded from Gen 2, and had a 2K 4 Runner.

 

Ain't got much to add since I don't have one (YET) but thought I would reiterate some interesting tidbits I've read.

-Toyota is building 2500 TRD Pros for 2017, with roughly even numbers across all 3 colors. So ~830 Pros in each color.

-95% of all Pros will be Automatic, the rest Manual. That comes out to 125 MT Pros in total. ~41 MT Pros in each color.

-Average wait time for a Pro ranges widely, but seems to be an average of 3 months. Unless you happen to find an unsold Pro sitting on a dealer lot. (Unlikely.)

-Most dealers are charging sticker, some regions have markup, some people are getting them for slightly below MSRP. For most potential buyers, expect to pay sticker.

-All TRD Pros come with a Toyota Certified Lube designed to oil up your butthole for the inevitable hate that you'll get from TW for buying a Pro.


All things considered, I still want a Pro Taco. Bring on the hate!

 

I don't own a pro, but I have heard of a number of people with condensation in their Rigid LED Fogs.

Even saw a YouTube review of one in Cement and a closeup of the fogs had condensation as well. Pretty sad to hear of the quality issues with an OEM/Rigid product that costs so much $$$.

Oh yeah and the fact that every TRD Pro in the SoCal region has been marked up and selling at $50k+

Saw Toyota of Escondido advertise a barcelona red pro for $64k lololol

 

I bought my 2nd gen at Escondido. Shame. I rather liked them at the time. Wow.

 

There are 2 Cement MT Pros at Toyota of Carlsbad listed at MSRP on their website. Then again, considering the popularity of the Pros, they are most likely not there anymore, especially since they were listed last week.

Some dealers are definitely marking them up, but if you're patient you can find one for MSRP in SoCal.

 

I have a BR MT, I've only heard of one other on TW. Only options I got were paint protection film, all weather mats, and bed rail cleats.

I have had no issues except for TPMS refusing to see sensors. This was caused by tire shop when they swapped me to 255/85r16 Cooper Discoverer ST.

The only other mod I've done was to bash in the spare tire standoffs so I could fit my full size spare into the hoist without rubbing on the exhaust pipe.

I miss my cable shift transfer case, and I haven't used the entune system for anything but XM so far, but at least I have Alt Nation programmed as a preset.

No condensation in the lights, but I'm not sure I could see it if there was, because of the thick layer of salt coating my truck.

Oh yeah, these are the hottest seat heaters I've ever had.

--- One question I have for other owners ... how are you stashing your misc gear in the limited cab space?

Drivers side under back seat - fire extinguisher, first aid kit, two dog leashes
Drivers side behind back seat - old school road atlas of michigan, my US atlas is missing after swapping vehicles
Passenger side under seat - next to jack I have a pair of gloves, pressure gauge, and tire plug kit
Passenger side behind back seat - jumper cables, air compressor, large snatch strap and pintle hitch, drop cloth, and seat cover for dogs
Bed small hatch - small snatch strap and bungees
Bed large hatch - two ratchet straps

Missing items at the moment - small truck tool kit, large clevis, and 2" ball hitch

Need to get - trailer wiring extension - anyone notice how far away the sockets are from the hitch? WTF are previous generations like that too? My old 4Runner was far away too.

 

I bought a couple handy springtail STAT molle bags (2 large, 2 med) to organize my recovery and gear bits in the rear stash areas.

Finally got tired of dust, dirt and water leaching in from the tailgate under my tonneau and coating the camping gear, installed some

$30 RealTruck Extang Maxseal Truck Bed Tailgate Seal | 1140 | Universal Fitment

tailgate seal and a few short strips in front bed corners to solve 99% of the problem.

Agree with matt on the seat heaters, no even a close second, they'll turn your bum into a pot roast.

Full disclosure, I was one of the few lucky SOB's that just happened upon one sitting at a local dealer from deal that fell thru day before. Two other buyers were circling and giving me the stink eye while doing up the paper work.

 

I only keep one roll of TP and two spatulas behind the rear seats.

 

Prone to all the same issues as the 2016 trims but hood doesn't shake because fake scoop keeps it in place.

 

I highly doubt there is anything specifically wrong with the trd pro that other TRDOR owners aren't having. Unless your rigid LEDs are broke or your fox suspension is shot.. it's the same truck.

Maybe an emblem will fall off?

The pro is the same truck as a OR with different cosmetics and suspension. The 2017 I test drove had the same howling diff as my 2016 and same shift happy transmission.

 

i see. but that was still a sweeping generalization. i say because i test drove two 3rd gen dcsb's before getting my truck and the general fit and finish, stuff you can clearly detect on a test drive - cosmetic, build, and mechanicals - was significantly and obviously less than my truck. but like i said somewhere else, i'm not even to 1k miles yet. so ::knocks on wood::

 

Think it is mostly in your head, no offense but there is no less care and feeding put into the process of manufacturing and building the Pro as there is a TRD OR or Sport. Same production lines, same critical suppliers on 99% of the components, same staff and same quality control processes. Sure the seating upholstery and some minor aesthetics probably gives the feel of nicer fit and finish over other trims but I'm guessing the 48k price tag does the same.

 

what's not in your head?... that's what perception is, but i use the words 'significantly' and 'obviously' for a reason.. anyway, as far as quality goes, we will see.

 

Agree 100%. I test drove a SR and Sport 2016 and can't believe the low quality of the truck. It felt like it was right for Nigerians not for us Americans.

I reluctantly ordered a 2016 OR thinking that's the right truck. Boy was I wrong.

I had to get rid of it quick before people saw me in that embarrassment of the truck

Finally when I got my Pro, I knew all was right in the world. Quality is 1st world. Right for America. No cheap junk here. Panel gaps, quality are worlds ahead of other third gens. From ride quality to the pull of the motor to the fox suspension, Pro was built for the true connoisseur who wears Louboutin shoes and Patek watches. Rest of the Tacoma line are for Seiko wearing addidas wearing people. I mean I am no elitist and I realize that those people need a Tacoma too, but I don't understand why they constantly compare themselves to our Pro. Don't they realize we are a few cuts of cloth above them ? Toyota Pro is made from only the freshest, finest whale foreskins harvested by artisanal Japanese whalers - and the best quality parts are used -all others are merely imitations and cannot possibly be of equal quality.

Thus the reason us Pro guys are not complaining about body seam leaks, atf fluid low, window whistle noise, diff howl etc . Ours just are built to a higher standard that only Seguo Marchionne can appreciate.

Really, what price can you put on quality?

If all the Pros are being built in Texas and a lot of the other trims in Mexico it'll be interesting to see if this model really shares some of the known Gen 3 issues or not.

 

my OEM shift knob's cover is made from the skin of an albino whale's penis born under the 3rd full moon during the 19th planetary confluence who happened to be born with a TRD birthmark. beat that, haterz.

 

nobody seems to know the inside story yet. but i'm guessing there is at least a little more QA attention on the line regarding the Pros. for an extremely well-hyped limited run vehicle they would be absolute fools to not afford additional QA inspection at a minimum. even if the lines and bits are the same. and yes, smitty, the 'absolute fools' remark is for you to call them out again if you feel compelled. because you just may be right, and a few of us are just lucky. like i said, we will know more as time goes...
