2017 TPMS Error with New Rims and Tires

Hoping for advice on a TPMS issue that I am having. I have a '17 Off Road Double 4WD and I added SEMA TRD 17's on with 285/70/17's. Discount Tire did the tires and installed the rims and ever since the TPMS won't read tire pressure on the display and after I drive for 30 minutes or so, the TPMS light comes on. I took it back to discount tire and they checked that there are TPMS on the rims with this handheld reader. I reset the TPMS under the dash, but it did it again the next time I drove any distance and never showed the individual tire pressure. The display shows "---" for each of the tires. Any help?

 

1st post...welcome, sounds like there's a communication issue probably need reprogrammed or they were damaged during install.

Your dealer, unless feeling very generous, will likely disavow warranty.

 

Did you buy new TPMS sensors for your new wheels or transfer the existing ones from your old wheels?

 

Good gawd, I hope he didn't buy new ones at $100 a pop! If so a trip to the dealer is required to sinc to the truck.

 

What's a rim

 

so TMPS sensors from any Tacoma should work, or only more recent years?
I'm scouring craigslist to solve this issue and there's a few sets locally...

 

they need to be from the new model. i might have a set i can get rid of.

if you put new tpms sensors you will have to reprogram the ecu with the new IDs. you cant just pop them in and have the truck read them.

I can't figure out if the tire shop is struggling with the sensors or the programming... they're not sure yet either!

OP, If you used your existing TPMS sensors I'd say there's something wrong and you should go to the dealer. If you bought new TPMS sensors, I'd say you need to go to the dealer and get them programmed, Either way its a trip to the dealer and money down the tube

 

Apparently some of the later years of the 2nd generation Tacomas use the same sensor. Your best bet would be to find out what vehicle the sensors came off of. Search one of the online Toyota parts sites for sensors for that vehicle and see if the part numbers match what you need for your truck.

 

It seems like tire shops are overwhelmed by all of the variations of TPMS systems plus constant changes with new vehicle models that their tools don't yet have updates for. You would like to think that since they deal with these all day every day that they would have it figured out but that doesn't seem to be the case.

3rd gen. Tacomas have been out long enough that any decent shop should have an update for their tools by now. Your best bet is to go in knowing exactly what needs to be done for your vehicle and tell them what they need to do.

 

Agreed... the shop just called and they're taking it to the dealership to get it working, hopefully they'll have an updated Techstream device or whatever it is that they use by the time Spring rolls around.
