Has anyone swapped the steering radio controls from the 2016+ into their 2014/2015 truck? I've notice they moved around the the volume control and handfree phone buttons on the 2016+

I just bought a black set on eBay. Time to find out if this will work. My guess is that it will require the running of an additional wire.

Do you have a 2012+ or an 07?

I have an 07, but I ran an extra wire to the radio from the clock spring and put 2014 controls in it. I'm guessing another wire will be needed to accommodate even more buttons. I need to find wiring diagrams for 2014 and 2016 trucks.

It won't work without some serious changes. The 2016 controls utilize a 12-pin connector, and the 2014 controls I currently have use a 10-pin connector. It requires a clock spring replacement and is not worth it to me. I'm sure it can be done, but I have no desire to go further with it.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I've been combing the internet all day trying to sort this. I'm trying to change that 12 pin female connector on a 2016+ steering wheel control to the 10 pin connector (2005-2015) however all the wiring diagrams for 2016+ do not show the wires between the clock spring and the controls so I can't identify the wires on the control. I'm about to buy a generic clock spring and check continuity so that I can trace the identity of these wires. From looking at the steering wheel controls from a 2017 tacoma I have the following from the wheel into the clock spring:

    1 -
2 - red (from left control)
    3 -
4 - purple (from right control)
5 - yellow (from right control)
6 - blue (wire with connector on the end which would go to the airbag)
7 - grey (from left control)
8 - silver (from left control)
    9 -
10 - black (from left control)
    11 -
    12 -

Seems like from the left we probably have one wire for ill, one wire for ground, and two for control
Seems like from the right we probably have two wires for control

    wires 1, 3, 9, 11, and 12 are empty

traveling between the controls are black-grey (guessing ground) and red-blue (guessing illumination)

From reading online I need to figure out what wires are ill, sw1, sw2, sw3 (if it exists), and swg

from the clock spring to vehicle side of things per the wiring diagrams these wires might be: I can't figure out if there are 12 or 14 pins here, I'm finding conflicting information...???

    1 - cruise
    2 - cruise
    3 - swg or ill- ?
    4 - guessing sw3
    5 - sw2
    6 - sw1
    7 -
    8 -
    9 -
    10 -
    11 -
    12 - IL+2?
    13 - IL+2?
    14 -

    Thanks!

I don't think it would be possible as they operate off resistance and are configured differently between the 2nd gen and 3rd gen because the 3rd gen also has controls for the Combination Meter.

Thanks for the reply. I'm wiring to an aftermarket headunit so I think as long as I can isolate the aforementioned wires at the wheel control I think I can make it work?

I may have hit a big break. I further disassembled the controls AIL4fc9N119xjb6r3O17DM4Ikh2HcfnWo4QOgTuN_4e21d6289753ccc7b7222149333edd54b9a09629.jpg

(disregard my earlier post about what the wires might mean, my numbering was off, this is looking at the female end of the connector counting from top left to right.)
    1 - blue - horn?
    2 - yellow +DP (right side controls)
    3 - purple +DP2 (right side controls)
    4 -
    5 - red IL+2
    6 -
    7 -
8 - black EAU (aka SWG)
    9 -
10 - silver AU2 (from left side control) (AKA SW2)
11 - grey AU1 (from left side control (AKA SW1)
    12 -

I'm headed to the junkyard tomorrow for a 10 pin connector and another random part. I'm going to wire up SWG, SW1, and SW2. I don't think I have SW3 although the above diagram does show it exists...??? maybe it is only for trims that have even more buttons? I have 8 buttons on my left control, the above diagram lists 9...??? I have up, down, volume up, volume down, mode/mute hold, answer call, hang up call.

Providing the resistance values of the switches are correct for whatever you are using I suppose it should work.
