Not having a nav vehicle, I was unaware the new ones are Garmin based, and free (it is free, correct?)

IIRC previously folks had to use the dealer and had to pay a price.

Anyway, the steps you show are very similar to actually updating a portable Garmin, except of course you can connect it directly to your PC for a direct update.

    I'd certainly try it.

One tip I learned on my last update of my portable. Before you start, be sure you have the latest version of Garmin Express loaded on your PC to work from. I did not (didn't realize it needed an update) and it would not recognize the SD card in my portable, and thus kept telling me internal memory was full. Once Garmin Express was updated, everything went quick.

Yea, the hour or so part is about right. That's around how long the portable takes too, and of course you have to leave it connected to a powered up PC

Interesting. The instructions depict a different headunit user interface, and also depict a different microsd slot arrangement. That suggests it is meant for a different headunit than is on my P&T JBL equipped truck, so I'll not be the first to try it... :)

This is part of the FAQ in the OPs link. It seems 'some' Toyotas must be Garmin based, but it doesn't specify which. Tacomas may not be, as @bajatacoguy suggests

Even if they are, you only get a year. I'll stick with my portable.

    Subscription Questions
Do I have to pay for map updates?
For Toyota vehicles with Garmin navigation, a user gets 1 year of map updates at no cost.

How much longer will I receive free map updates for?
Garmin Express will display how much time you have left in your subscription.

hmm... I hadn't downloaded the instructions... but you are correct. The unit in the instructions looks nothing like the one in my truck. Oh well.. :-/

In vehicle nav useless. Download WAZE to your smartphone and be done with it.
