Sounds like yours literally froze lol. Mine locked up within 2 minutes of engaging the e-brake. Sounds like it's a problem with the e-brake disengaging under very particular circumstances. Regardless of temperature

When you get it apart you'll find that everything is mechanically fine, but very dirty and in need of cleaning and lubrication of all motion points. Be sure to include the ebrake cable / sheath in your inspection.

The reason I say you'll find it fine is because if something like one of the springs were broken, you'd already know you have a problem still.

Both front and rear brakes should be serviced (not replaced) at least once a year on most daily drivers.

Live in salt country or drive off road in mud/wet a lot, and it should move up to 3-4 times a year.

Thanks for the info... Sounds like I'm about 5 years late on my brake maintenance :( this truck lives off road. It's not surprising that I need to work on brakes and such. I've already had to replace the throw out bearing...

I had that happen one time in a parking lot in 70 degree weather right before I was going to ship my Taco overseas. Nothing I did would make that damn thing release. Got frustrated and went back inside to cool down for a few minutes. Came back out, put it in drive and drove away like nothing. Never did it again. Super weird.

I've had the parking brake cable freeze with the brakes on. My solution was to get as much WD40 in between the the cable and its sheath as possible. (one of the rare times when I've WD40 to actually displace water :D)

If anyone mentioned it, I didn't see it...

Look where the parking brake cable goes into the drum. There's a grommet there that's known to rot, allowing water to get into the cable housing - which can freeze. The solution is a full parking brake cable replacement, which (I've read) is neither cheap nor easy.

Thank you for the information. I'm going fishing in the morning and I'll check that out before I leave. Oh, and merry Christmas!

Too much to list, but enough to get me in trouble. Repeatedly.
I had the parking-brake-wouldn't-release-without-backing-up thing happen a few times. Then I started having one wheel lock up randomly when driving on trails, totally unrelated to the parking brake (always awesome when you're on a narrow trail and suddenly the back end starts going sideways).

Found out the problem was as simple as I could hope. Brakes needed lube.

I took apart both rears, couldn't find anything wrong, except a lack of lube. So I greased up all the contact points (the places SUPPOSED to have grease) with that Permatex purple ceramic-based caliper grease, and haven't had the problem come back since. That was 40,000 miles ago.

Btw- don't use anti-seize as brake lube. That was my problem.

For what it's worth, I've had this problem (frozen ebrake cable) happen on two different S10s before I got my Tacoma. I think it happens to pretty much any vehical. I try to avoid using my ebrake in the winter.
