I hunted with a Jefferies Takedown bow until an arm injury forced me to give up shooting a bow. Very easy to stow in it's bag along with a small quiver of arrows. I tried compounds for a short period but never really took to them like I did recurves (I had a couple but I shot the Jefferies the most and hunted with it). I even had a longbow for a while before a friend admitted he wanted it so I gave it to him as a birthday present.

We have a couple really nice hand made slingshots here that we play with that I would try to take small game with if I had to but I grew up with bows and have confidence in my ability with them.

I have my Grandfathers 56' Super Kodiak and it has always been the smoothest bow I've ever shot until last night. This Kodiak takedown felt so similar in my hand that it surprised me. I haven't hunted traditional in years but I do bowfish with and older Hoyt recurve and it's really fun. Right now I'm using the same compound bow - 2014 Hoyt Faktor Turbo - for deer, turkey, and bear but I'd really like to transition to a takedown recurve for everything.

I struggled with this almost a year ago on lawn tractor tire and damn near blew my thumb off. Couldn't wait at all as soon as I saw it.

 

I've had a couple bad experiences with crowd funded projects in the past but this one impressed me from the jump which is why I backed it. Now that I have them in hand I'm glad that I did as they are definitely high quality.

I've ripped two valve stems off while wheeling in the past and I was lucky to have a full size spare each time. I've been carrying spare valve stems for years but they are quite a pain to install. Now with these I have greater confidence that I can effect a field repair.

Do you mean a 1956 Super Kodiak? Wow, nice bows. Make sure the fiberglass on the limbs is in good shape, you definitely don't want a limb snapping under draw. I retired an old Bear recurve I was given that had been stored improperly and the fiberglass was in bad shape. It sucked because it looked really nice from a distance.

 

You can "wake up" old recurves but it takes time and allot of patience to do it right. Took me about two months to get the 56' SK to where it could be safely drawn again. Now it gets shot at least once a month and it's still rock solid.

 

Substitute NJ for Maryland and 10 years for 8 and I'd just ditto your post.

 

Yea I hate driving to PA from NC. Have to get out before Maryland state line and lock my CC up in the trunk just in case.

My boss is from NY but lives here now and has his CCP here in NC.. and can't even take it with him when he drives back home to visit. Such an ignorant concept that you don't have full reciprocity in all states..

 

Alabama to California isn't any better. When I get to California not only does my CC need to be out of reach but, unloaded too. Kind of pointless to have with you.

 

Yeah I've heard of folks refreshing them but I'm not sure how since there seems to be no consensus on the forums. I doubt this one is worth it; it's a typical Bear Kodiak Magnum with a draw weight of 45#, unknown date since I never bothered to look up the serial number or try dating it. I did shoot it for a while but it's got longitudinal stress cracks running up the limbs plus some "crazing" that seemed to get worse after shooting it. If it was just the horizontal cracks in the gel coat I wouldn't worry but the longer cracks relegated it to a wall hanger at my buddy’s farm; there's no string on it and I put a sticker on it that says "do not use".

I'd love to see a picture of your bow if you have one handy, I love older hunting/sporting gear. Some of the older leather quivers were really works of art as well, especially when the whole buckskinning movement had folks making a lot of their own gear.

 

That's a bummer about the damage, it just sucks finding that a tool no longer works. I need to take pictures of all of my bows as I don't really have any. It's funny that you brought it up as my wife and I were just talking about what needs to be added to the household inventory for insurance and all of the archery gear came up.

 

An interesting take on it, for sure. Must be nice to have those sorts of budgets to work with, though.

 

A neighbor of mine has invested in space in some underground community that is being created inside an old salt mine. Tried to get me to buy into it but quit when after questioning him for awhile I determined that the only real qualifier for entry was money. I reminded him that there are allot of wealthy people that have no clue how a hammer works and have no patience to learn how that if they were to be locked in together they would most likely be at each other's throats in less than six months. He doesn't really talk to me much anymore because he knows that he falls into the same category of not having a clue how to use tools.

See it as a win as he doesn't ask me to fix his crap anymore.

 

I haven't forgotten my promise to let you guys know how these work. I still have the "expired" ones and am getting ready to order a few more to stash at each house and in each car as all of the reviews that I'm getting back from others say that they really work well and in the end, you still have a blanket. I plan to test the expired ones while in my tree stand during bow hunting season this year.

I did use my wife's fears to justify a purchase today. We haul our off-road camper trailer with us more and more and don't like to load water until we are getting off the hard roads and heading out onto the trails. The problem is that very few places are cool with you drawing 180 liters of water by asking, "please may I." Sometimes there are freshwater rivers and streams on or near our trails that we can fill from. We've been lucky to draw from some RV parks that are near the highway but we get a little sketched out about their water as many of their septic tanks that everyone dumps their blackwater into are old and leak into the groundwater which of course then ends up in their wells. With concerns about germs in streams and rivers and the whole "how is the water supply sorted" questions about RV parks I bought this UV water purification system today.

I've bought one 20' real drinking water hose from the RV Water Filter store with stainless end fittings and intend to swap the brass fittings out on the purifier to stainless as well to reduce lead content. I intend to order a few shorter hose sections to help make things easier as well. Added a pair of brand new Scepter military water cans to the "camping" gear as well that stay in the truck for when we have to separate from the trailer and the luxuries that it contains.

 

Any body come up with a good drone mount where you could launch your drone for tactical advantages while your still in the truck and maybe a swivel 50 cal rifle mount for the bed to keep the yahoos off your ass before they get close

 

We don't carry much water with us either, until we get "near" our destination.

We also don't carry as much water as you, but I will share our water gathering "system" (which may work for other readers out there.)

We normally stop by a grocery store for provisions - we bring some with us, but pick up fresh foods, and common items we don't want to drag across the country. Most grocery stores have a Glacier Water machine. It dispenses filtered water for about $0.25 a gallon - you need your own container. Our Scepter MWCs fit just fine in the machines. At that rate, it is cheaper than buying gallon jugs of water.

When we hit the trail for a week long trip, we start with about 15 gallons of water. If we will be passing through a town, we are usually more generous with showering, since we can easily refill. Otherwise, water is rationed.
