I only have 40k on my 4.0l. The last couple of weeks I have noticed a rubber smell from the exhaust in the morning. I then had a strong gas smell yesterday when I started it. Today when I started it a lot of white smoke came out for a few minutes and then lessened. I don't notice a coolant smell to the exhuast, only rubber or fuel, any thoughts?

My 4 cylinder also has a gasoline/chemical-like odor when when started on cold mornings, along with the steam. Usually more prominent with colder ambient temps. Every engine requires a rich fuel mixture on cold start, and unburned fuel and water vapor (from combustion) gets past the catalytic converter(s) until they warm up. What you're describing sounds normal to me.

I am hoping we just had perfect atmospheric conditions yesterday that cause steam from the exhaust like I have never seen before. The first thing I did after seeing the exhaust from the truck was start my highlander to see if it looked the same, but it didn't which is why I got concerned.
