They go by what is on the paper (bill of sale)

You go to DMV, do a VIN verification
    Pay smog
    Title transfer
Pay taxes (if purchased from private party)

    Done.

i had to take mine to get it weighed - oregon did not have a weight listed on their title, so i had to get that done, at a certified dmv approved place. was only like $10 but an extra step....

Just registered with a Pro I bought out of state. before going to DMV
    1. Get a smog check last 90 days
    2. Get weigh
    3. They verify VIN at dmv
    4. They charge you taxes on how much you paid ( bill of sale)
    5. Pay for tags.

From the dmv it's mainly an issue with motorcycles but if it's not a 50 state vehicle it needs to have more than 7500 miles also any vehicle that has less than 7500 miles will be considered a new vehicle.

If you are buying a used vehicle, there is something about it needing to have more than 7500 mIles on it or DMC screws you somehow.

If you can get a copy of the current registration, it might have the weight on there and you can avoid having to get the weight. Or if it was ever registered in CA previously, the weight should be in the system already. I recently bought a truck from out of state and that's what I experienced.

Where are you getting this info? I work in the industry...

Steps are (like stated in prior posts)

    1. VIN Verification (Any DMV, or Law Enforcement officer can do this for you, unless you know someone who has their VV state license like I have mine but DMV is the easiest. No need to wait in line, just go to the behind the wheel drivers test line outside wit your vehicle, pop the hood and one of the people issuing the drivers test can do it for you. If no one is there, they usually have a bell that says "Inspection" or "Verification" that you can ring)
    2. Weight Cert (Most recycling places will have a weigh station, there is one in Santa Ana off Grand and 17th cost is $15-$25 depending on the station)
    3. Smog Cert
    4. Sale paperwork (tax is based off the price you paid)

All Toyotas are 50 state emissions.

If its a private party sale, try to get the guy to agree to put $1000 on the bill of sale.
