How about some logic that says "IF FOB detected when door opened, don't shut engine off?"

Your asking them to employ logic after they put drum brakes on a 2017 vehicle?

Meh. I prefer drums on the rear. Under heavy braking most of the braking force ends up on the front discs anyway, and rear discs can become a maintenance nightmare.

Plus it's not like the four wheel disc Colorado is stopping any shorter... it actually needed two more feet than the Taco. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/car-and-driver-comparison-2016-tacoma-v-2016-colorado.394133/

I have what i was told was aftermarket remote start that was installed at the stealership before i took delivery. It does shut off when you open the door as previous people have stated. Mine however restarts immediately as soon as you step on brake and push start button. I dont experience the 20 second starting issue that people have discussed.

This is how I thought it was supposed to work. If the FOB isn't present the car shuts off therefore the vehicle can't be stolen. Simple.
The bypass was so simple on my manual car and that seemed more dangerous than this situation.
As far as it being a screw up by an engineer I'd think if it was true there'd be a fix out immediately

Do you really think that the engineers who have cracked the codes to thousands of vehicles have simply overlooked or screwed up something like this? Maybe its the fact that Toyota's security and encryption is so far ahead of Ford Dodge Chevy junk etc that the engineers have not figured it all out yet.

As a small business owner of a shop that does hundreds of remote start installs every winter, this thread is so painful to read through haha! 2 questions, 1. Would you like to get out of bed in the morning when the temp is -20, to walk outside and manually start your vehicle? 2. Would you like to get out of bed in the morning, or even just stay in bed, grab your remote or phone, hit a button and start the vehicle? I'll take option 2 all day every day, even if I have to restart my truck when I get outside.

After remote started, ALL PTS Toyota/Lexus, Honda/Acura vehicles have to shut down upon entering the vehicle, before the car can be driven, which has something to do with the vehicle seeing a key enter its proximity after being remote started. Its not a law, its partially for safety, but mostly to eliminate error codes from immobilizing the vehicle. I'm not an engineer, just a measly installer. There used to be firmwares that allowed an old school key wrap to be used on Toyota PTS vehicles for remote start, and in that case the "takeover" was available. I did hundreds of them like that. Thank Toyota for making things so well these days. There will eventually be a solution to this "problem" as some see it, just like how up until a couple years ago, you literally could not install a remote start in most Mercedes vehicles. Anyway, rant over. Once I get my Tacoma, I'm going to look into an alternative remote start install method because I like a challenge.

Update for those who care and those who don't....so I had my 5k at dealership yesterday and I asked them to look at the issue of the truck not restarting when door is opened after autostart. The tech was able to recreate (A first I know of) the issue and figured out what I was doing that caused the issue. The installer had tied the shutoff/immobilizer to the door switch so that if the door was left open it would not start. What I was doing was starting the car from inside going outside and unlocking it and putting all my gear in the passenger seat from the passenger door, reaching over and using my snow scraper on the brake peddle and starting the truck with the pass door open, that no work. Another time I recalled when talking to them I had just halfass sat in the drivers seat with the door open and it wouldn't start, I had to get back out to scrape windows and clear snow. So long story short I tested it at the dealership and at home this morning and as long as the door is closed it will restart, I could update if I find this isn't the case but so far it's been tested 3 times.

So if I am reading this correctly, If you start the truck with the remote then open the door the car will die and will not restart if a door is open?

FWIW, I figured I'd give it a try on my truck real quick. I remote started it, walked up and unlocked it, opened the door and it shut down as expected. Immediately climbed in, left the door open, foot on brake and hit the Start button.

    It started as normal.

I have no idea what's different about @Goochwarmer's install, but I can say I don't see that trouble with my DEI DBALL2 install. I suspect the KBVooDoo kit would be the same but don't have one.

Think he may actually have an actual alarm installed that's hijacking the start sequence

Ok, an alarm would make sense then

It makes sense....yet it still doesn't to me anyway. Once I open the door and I have the FOB (It is a push to start) the FOB should take over the command of the operation so the door shouldn't matter, just like getting in and starting it regularly door open and all. It is a Compustar so it is a combo alarm/autostart and that may be the issue...Like with a garage door that hits it's pressure limit it needs to go all the way back up and reset before descending again.

Take it back to the installer and have them fix it. That is definitely not normal for a vehicle to act like that. I install a ton of Compustar in all kinds of vehicles and when installed correctly, there is nothing remote start related that should ever stop a vehicle from starting like you describe.

    Getting one put in Saturday.

I was just talking to a co-worker here that has a new Explorer, his remote
came with the truck from Ford and it does NOT kill the engine when he gets in.

The fact it works on a Ford is irrelevant. This is a Lexus/Toyota issue. Only way around it would probably be to set the runtime to the max possible and disable the door pin which would cause other problems.

I will admit that it will be annoying it dies when you open the door, but it isn't that annoying that I would want to disable door pins and cause possible other issues.

Yeah, i have had the Viper SmartStart installed for about 2 weeks now and I have gotten used to it shutting the car off. I still wish it behaved like our Escape and left the engine running but whatever, it is fine. I absolutely love being able to use my phone to start my truck from my desk at work or when we are out and about.
