Airbags help a lot. I have absolutely zero problem suggesting them to anyone. And if you dont mind the $, the automatic self leveling kit is beyond nice. Never have to worry about setting pressure for different loads or trailers. Just set the ride height when you install it and its good to go.
I am running 5100s with 884s in the front and recall springs with AAL in the rear. 255/85r16 Cooper ST Maxx without regear. When towing my car, I also use a WD hitch. Which also makes a big difference.

It's not about ride or gearing.

It's about what load you can safely and reliably handle in a midsize truck.

You're just a hair below it's rated figure with the boat. Not including any ice chests or gear, or cargo.

It isn't the right truck for the job, even if you don't want to hear it. It's not about comfort or driving performance.

It is definately a job more suited for a tundra or f150.

    I am the devils advocate.
Do you have towing experience? if yes then you can tow with a Tacoma.

    The bad:
Folks are right. It will be noisy, lucky to get 10mpg, will need LT tires instead of stock junk, air bags a must. You will be in the right lane all the time. Auto transmission will need a big cooler.

If only a few times a year who cares if you are in the right lane and keep the speed down. (50 or less)

Yes folks I do tow a 3500 pound camper with a roof over it with a 2010 Tacoma 4x4 2.7. (Reg Cab). Its does about 10mpg, top speed 69 mph.
This is with 4.88 gears, E rated tires, air bags, and a $400 electric brake controller. several hundred pounds of tools in the bed keep the rear planted. I am under all the axle and tire weights.

Have been halfway across the country a couple of times with this. 2.7 will happily rev at 5000 for hours on end.

If it were unsafe then many of the folks here (Houston) who tow boats with some creative (Bmw sport sedan towing two big jet skis no brakes on trailer) would be in danger

This advice is given that you understand to keep speed low (my towing is about 55). My rv is a giant sail, if weather windy I pull over for the night, probably does not apply to a boat.
Let no one get close to you for stopping reasons. Let the flames fly

Anytime you're in the Houston area, you're more than welcome to tag along. I do admit though, at 35 and weighing the most I have ever in my life, we surf a lot more than board these days.

Yes, the wake is insane, World Class

Nah, these days Malibu is probably the least amount of wake boat for the money. Their entry level Axis is the worst constructed boat on the market. Malibu brings nothing to the table over and beyond any other manufacturer for the premium they ask. They come with no available wake plate which is a huge turnoff for me as I go on big lakes with lots of chop. It becomes unmanagable. Nautique, MasterCraft, and Supra(Supra is Moomba's parent company) are considered the "big 3" and the rest just fall in line somewhere behind...

Local dealer also makes a huge difference with boats. The Houston Malibu dealer is the worst around, absolutely zero customer service. And as many know, ALL boats need service

To each their own. I was just being facetious. We have a wakesetter 247 and it is by far the best wake I've ridden and we demo'd several before buying. Malibu is the #1 selling boat up here in MN. Tige would be my next choice. Had one before the Malibu and it was a nice boat as well.

No harm. I love good boat talk

Malibu is the #1 selling wakeboat boat, period. It stems from when they literally invented the surf gate.

    Nothing innovative since

This is my 6th boat with Supra and Mastercraft being my last two.

90% of my opinion stems from our houston Malibu dealer. They're just garbage. Not a bad boat by any means, but not innovative either.

You'll be fine. I have a Nautique 220 and all loaded up I'm at 6000 lbs and it towes great to my local lakes. Our longest trip towing has been about 250 miles with plenty of hills and it did great. The Tacoma drank gas faster than I could finish my beverages but it looked good doing it. Get a diesel if your looking for long trips and can afford the price.

No, its edge of GCWR. **ABILITY** is considerably above that.

This is complete and utter nonsense.
Smaller engine will burn LESS fuel than larger engine.
The thing that confuses DUMBDUMBS about that, is that while a great big V10 or whatever might increase fuel consumption by, say, 5%, the smaller engine will increase fuel consumption by... maybe 50%. While these numbers look scary, the reality is that 50% more fuel consumption on a Tacoma is STILL LOWER than that V10 pig will burn.

    I.e.
V10: 10 mpg empty, 9.5 mpg with the big load.
Tacoma: 20 mpg empty, 13.33 mpg with the big load.

A dumbdumb will see that and say that the Tacoma is doing bad, because it went WAAAAAAAAY down, but the V10 only went down a little bit.
But in reality, 13.33 > 9.5. Tacoma still wins.
And add to that the fact that MOST of the time you won't actually be pulling a huge load....

JUst wanted to thank everybody above for their input, I ended up buying a 2017 Tundra 4x4 this past weekend. Pretty sweet off road package!

Quit looking at new trucks (you say Tundra too much $) and find a clean used model that will do the job.

The F150 you're lamenting resale value on is now your friend, if you're buying it used. And you say it's a weekend truck, so who cares, as it's going to be a low mileage venture to pull the hole in the water anyway?

You can get worse MPG (you won't) and have safer towing, along with more cab space and at the same time have oodles of $ left over from buying a more budget friendly piece.

Set some of that aside for the occasional repair (they aren't the steaming piles Toyota fan-bois here would have you believe) and enjoy it!
