Fan Clutch Oil

Have any of you replaced or tuned your fan clutch oil?

This seems to be a normal thing among the LC community, but I can't find any info for our trucks.

Any info appreciated - i.e. what viscosity comes in the various stock fan clutches, or any luck with using a particular viscosity. Thanks

 

Also, does anyone know the difference between the 3RZ and 5VZ fan clutches? Different temp threshold, lockup amt, bolt patterns? There doesn't appear to be any public data on this

 

Not sure about 3rz vs 5vz but the 5vz has at least two variants, one with the tow package and one without.

 

your fan clutch shouldn't have any oil at all, you shouldn't be asking this question. only jeeps had hydraulic powered cooling fans. 3rz is the 2.7 liter and the 5vz is the 3.4

Don't tell people not to ask questions, that's when people who need to ask questions don't then end up screwing something up.

 

I have found the same in my research. Supposedly only one of the 5VZ options is available these days, and they are differentiated by the color of the hub.

Thats some great info. Fan clutches are such neat mechanical devices.

I purchased an aftermarket Hayden fan clutch from my local auto parts store. Hopefully it doesn't suck, otherwise I may try and give my old one a little love. Unfortunately I couldn't wait for a new Aisin one to arrive.

One thing to note however, is that my old fan clutch, while much larger than the cheap Hayden one, doesn't say Aisin anywhere on it. I would very much like to crack it open.

 

i didn't tell him to not ask a question. i told him he shouldn't be asking because this sounds like a prank like muffler bearings or blinker fluids. fan clutches don't have oil at all.

My point is I don't think you are correct, try clicking those links the other guy posted. Heck I have no idea if they have fluid or not, it seems they do and it isn't unreasonable.

holy shit what do ya know. i thought this guy was being pranked. ive never heard about changing just the oil let alone heard there even was any oil. I figured it was all controlled by an actual clutch design actuated by the thermostatic coil in the front.

Yes I believe the "standard" V6 clutches were superseded to the "heavy duty" version. They came OE on many equipment packages and was not part of the Toyota hitch kit.

I have 3 (don't ask), they are all the same.

 

seems it actually changes then temperature when the clutch engages, and can make an old clutch run like new. is toyota the only one that has this oil? and where would there a chart that shows what oil these clutches originally came with?

RC hobby stores carry the oil. It's been a long time, but I did an 80 series Land Cruiser fan clutch. I wouldn't call it tuning, but you heat it up to drain the old and in with the newer heavier(usually) oil. As stated above, it's to engage the fan sooner usually.
