All, I was offered an extended Warranty 8 yr/100k Miles with 100$ deductible on my 2017 TRDOR 6SPD for roughly 3,000$

Is this worth it? I know normally I would say no but because of the touch screen I'm tempted.

    Thanks

That same warranty was just quoted to me at $1600 and change about 2-3 months ago. Just FYI.

The only thing I put into my 2007 after 137,000 miles was a battery, tires, oil, grease, and one light bulb. (Okay, I did spend $200 on front brakes at 130,000)

I expect the same from my 2016.

You can do a lot with $3,000.

I paid $2000 which was a 6 year/100k mile bumper to bumper warranty as well as a 10 year paint, interior, and anti corrosion warranty. No deductible.

The main reason was because of the rear locker and crawl control. The other stuff was included.

    Touch screen?

    That's a $500 item.

You can buy 6 of them for $3,000. Let that be the least of your concerns.

The rear differential had to be replaced on my tacoma in the first 10k miles. The cost to have the dealer do this if not under warranty would have been upwards of $3k. Still I would not buy the warranty until the truck nears the end of its factory warranty. Then at that point consider if you feel you need it.

I would say that a Toyota Platinum Zero Deductible Warranty 8/125,000 should be half of that.

where do you live...there were dealers that were discounting them on the internet but were shut down by toyota but they can still discount them if you walk in. what you are looking at they were selling for under 1K factory toyota warranty.

    Yes and no.

Yes, in 2014 (IIRC) Toyota stopped dealers from being able to sell warranties online.

No, you can't walk into any dealer and buy one. You can only buy an extended warranty from a dealer in your state, and you can buy it over the phone, email, or in person. You just can't go outside your state to purchase one.

I think of it this way. The choice is to either:

    A) bet $3000 that you will require more than $3000 in non-warranty work in the next 8 years

    -or-

    B) bet $0 that you will require more than $3000 in non-warranty work in the next 8 years

I chose B, and bet myself $0. I call this "self-insuring". There is data out there showing that most vehicle problems happen quickly after production (that is when your manufacturing issues will show up) since parts likely to fail out of tolerance will probably just go sooner rather than later. And then things don't go wrong for a long time, per MTBF specs, unless the vehicle is abused. Not going to find a source right now, but it makes sense.

Such a 8 year warranty is tempting at $1500 (that's what I was offered), but there are still A LOT of exclusions on the list. Too many to make me jump at the deal, personally.

    Good luck.

My wifes transmission and front differential went out at 59,000 miles, just 1000 miles under her warranty. Imagine that cost..

Something to consider, if you are off roading with it, warranty does not cover damage you cause.

I opted for the gold warranty when buying mine.
    4 years 160 000km was around $1100
Given the issues with the new one, the drivetrain was my only concern.
I'm not much of a fan of warranty work after all the bullshit I dealt with, with my VW having them repair the same part 4 times. Read the fine print, most warranties do not need to replace with new parts only working parts, used parts or refurbs are often used in stead of new.
Hell one of the reason's I'm keeping my jetta is because its not 'road worthy' according to new transport laws. Passenger side impact air bag is defective...same one that was fixed 3 times under warranty.
Wiper motor was replaced 4 times, on the 4th one it was done by myself with new parts, 5 years later its yet to break again, and the one I pulled out had a refurb label on it.

If your concern is the touch screen...don't bother. the full system is probably $500-700 and pretty simple to install yourself, all you need is one trim tool, 10mm socket and that's about it.

Also consider cost of scheduled maintenance that won't be included in that.
I was offered extended as well for a similar price on the jetta, asked did it cover the timing belt replacement at 120k KM, they said no, unless it failed prior to its scheduled maintenance.
Haven't checked the scheduled maintenance for the tacoma but something to consider and look at. If its something that needs to be done that won't be covered may not be worth getting. For me the extended was $80 cheaper than what the timing belt job cost. Wasn't worth it to me. Only thing that ever failed on me was the turbo at 180k which again wouldn't have been covered anyways.

If the dealership won't hook you up, go buy it from another dealership. I bought a 7yr/100k for $1000 when I bought my truck. The first dealership quoted me $1800 to start but I called another dealership as we sat there and they just gave it to me.

For a couple dollar bump in my payment I got 5 year/60K miles full warranty, that also included dent fixing, stain removal, and some other interior and exterior stuff. This also takes care of all services that will be needed along with oil changes. Figured why not since in transferable, might help sell it when that time does come a few years down the road.
