    I traded in my 2013 for a 2017:

    What I like:
Overall Styling is better and interior.
    Very quite on the inside
Love the height of the truck and the fact that is sits level and looks like a truck!!
    What I don't like:
Truck feels very underpowered compared to my 2013 - I had the Trans update done Rev1 in November but it still feels underpowered and shifting is not smooth and hunts too much.
Overall the gas pedal feels dead (except when its not vibrating)
Gas pedal vibration - this is getting worse - especially when you push the engine into higher RPMs

The 2 above items make the overall experience of owning the redesigned truck very bad - I'm having a hard time enjoying this truck and wish I kept by 2013. I can deal with rattles etc but when you have issues like transmission and gas pedal that impact you each time your in the truck it is bothersome.

Hopefully Toyota finds a fix for both problems.

i know there are many threads on these issues but i do like when people post issues so i know what to expect or what may be common with these trucks.

i traded my 2015 sierra in on my tacoma since the sierra was very problematic. crappy thing is i went for the tacoma because of the reputation but it has seen about the same amount of visits to the dealer as the chev.

    front frame mounts
trans issues ( 4 visits to dealer still never going to be a fix)
    dash rattle
    gas pedal vibration
entune never pairing with phone or loosing connection randomly

and now the drivers seat is broken and waiting for a replacement to be shipped. been about a month now. the back of the seat is loose and has about an inch of movement. so whenever you hit the brakes you move forward and when you hit the gas you move back.

a lot of the small issues i dont mind but the transmission has been hard to get used to or enjoy.

i do however like the styling, interior styling and some of the creature comforts.

My 2017 Tacoma is absolutely perfect. It shifts like a dream, so smooth that I can't even feel it most times. It never hunts for gears. When I get on the gas it drops a few gears and hammers down. When I'm driving on the interstate and I come to a large incline the truck will drop a gear to maintain speed but so has every other car I've ever owned. My gas pedal has a little vibration I guess but nothing that would make me think something wrong.

As I drive my Tacoma I try to understand what everyone is bitching about and I just don't get it.

You may just have very little situational awareness and you might also have dull senses. Otherwise you have a unicorn third gen. The third Gens I have test drove for the most part are identical to my truck performance wise. My sister also has a 2016 SR5 DCSB 4x4; I've driven it and it has the howling rear diff but it does seem to shift a bit better than my truck.

My "dead pedal" feeling it's had without ECT on for the last 3600 miles just finally righted itself...must have reached a learning milestone. I think I'm on the third day now where it's actually doing what I expect it to and I'm not having to adjust throttle because it decided to upshift when I didn't want it to because I was giving it enough throttle input to continue accelerating.

About 1500 miles on the rev1 update. I've also been using ECT most of the time. I assumed it wasn't learning with ECT on but maybe it factors ECT use in setting throttle mapping/shift points.

I'm glad some folks here got good trucks. As for me, I find the truck very hard to love due to the issues with the powertrain.

My 17 is pretty much perfect, tailgate on mine was the only issue. Just had to realign it.

I have to agree the transmission/motor package leaves a lot to be desired. Other than the week mfer going to 4th at 75 I don't have any other complaints

No one is getting "good trucks" you either love it or you don't. You either notice small quirks or you don't. 99% of these are identical.

The problem isn't the software it's the gearing in the transmission and rear end that's fucked up.

As I can now say with 100% certainty, there's also variability with learning. I notice every small quirk and prior to a couple of days ago, I absolutely hated the way the throttle/shift points felt in Drive without ECT. Now it's very good in comparison.

Sounds like 3rd gen and 2nd gen are basically the same truck minus the torque band and 1 more gear.
My 15 has 2,200 rpm vibration , bad seats, poor mpg for such a small truck. But I still like it, fits it my garage, and is very agile (DCSB).
And it does surprisingly good at pulling my bass boat. But with shell and boat ,serious bro lean .
Firestone bags in its future .

There is the problem with the gen3. It's under geared. Mine is at 2100 in 6th and around 2500 in 5th.

Not to add a thorn to this discussion but in my experience as a regular city driver, I have not experienced any of the issues as noted, then again I never owned a Tacoma before. It accelerates just as well as I would expect it to, doesn't seem to hunt gears (I think it may when it downshifts as I come to a hault - not confirmed) and it has been an absolute joy to ride around. Plus the looks I get from tiny cars, like the guy who cut me off last night at a red whos side mirrors were aligned with my lamps ;p

I knew you were a critic, but going to the extreme of implying people have "very little situational awareness" and "dull senses" because they don't experience the issues you have is pretty bad.
