I've had two encounters with bears in my life. Closest was 10 feet. Never in a nice safe, tree stand. :)

First was while on a nice night time group mountain bike ride up a fairly rugged mountain north of Seattle. Someone yelled out "Bear Cubs!" I looked up and saw 2 cubs 75 feet from me and about 20 feet from our lead rider. My brain took two milliseconds to factor-in the high probability of a very protective mother bear in the vicinity and I made a quick U-turn and bombed down the hill. Nevermind the 3 girls and 2 guys I left behind. Chivalry is dead. What took us and hour and a half to get up the hill, took us about 5 minutes to get down. We all made it down. Never saw the mommy bear. Never had a chance to.

Second was in Harriman Mountain here in NY. My best friend and I were riding on a stretch of road, casually chatting while riding. In the corner of my eye, I spot a bear 10 feet in front of me who was about to cross the road and immediately laid out on the pedals and did the fastest bike sprint I've ever done in my life. My buddy thought I was trying to race and out-sprint him, so stayed on my ass. After about two hundred yards I slowed down and he goes "what the hell was that?" I told him there was a bear. He was pissed that I didn't yell it out. I told him I didn't have enough time and just reacted.

What's the lesson learned here Grasshopper @stairgod ?

Had a black bear walk right between my house and the neighbors house. He was just passing through. We have quiet a few of them in Schuylkill County. While black bears are generally harmless and shy, they can and have attacked humans. A decade or so ago a black bear took a toddler out of a play pen ona porch in upstate NY. They found and shot the bear and the child's remains were inside its stomach so as I said, no fuck wit bear.

But black bear is muy delicioso

Oh, and fuck mountain lions too. Never heard any reports of them in my area, but my buddy had seen prints on his property. Game warden confirmed that we do have them. I need a hand gun...

Not sure what brand he uses. He made me take a shower with scent hiding soap, and kept all his gear in tubs to keep scents from getting on them. Also sprayed me with a bunch of shit too. I figure if he smelled me it was due to my own fault some how. He's been hunting his entire life as well as been a gunsmith, and has hunted or done videography for hunting literally all over the world.

I wasn't too nervous for the first hour, but when he came back and checked out my tree I was a little nervous. And then when he climbed up a tree 10 ft from me almost to my height because something spooked him I was a bit nervous. I was most nervous when I had to get out of the stand in the pitch black dark, knowing he just left. He kept coming back in half hour rotations so when he left in the opposite direction I took my chance and peaced. It's funny because my buddy was across the street in a field at another stand and had to do a similar sneak out situation to get back to his jeep. But he was dealing with a mom and cub situation. All together we both saw about 5 bears that night.

Not sure if that's legal in Jersey? I don't know enough though, don't own a gun.

Yeah most people tell me black bears can be easily scared away if you are in that situation, but I rather not test it myself haha

Im not even sure thats legal. Never hunted bear...

    http://www.ozonicshunting.com/

Ozonics is an electronic system that uses some shit inside of it to make the smell of burning ozone itself... it neutralizes your scent immediately... My dad and me have yet to have a deer smell us after buying one... but its EXPENSIVE... my dad used his cabelas points to get it.

I didn't know you had a hunting license... we should get together with Ant and go bird hunting. Been talking to him about that forever now
