2017 Tacoma-East Coast Gear Supply bushing for noise

I've read other threads but wanted to know if anyone on the 2017 model Tacoma was having the Whomp, Whomp, whomp noise. I had a 2015 Tacoma lifted that needed it and appears this one will as well. Its a steady noise that doesn't change with the faster I drive and goes away all together in 4x4. Anyone else?

 

mechanically the 17 is identical to the 16 and i did the bushing to eliminate the vibe. certainly didnt happen at every speed though, usually noticed around 35-40mph. you might have something else going on like a balance issue in the drive line or wheels

 

I didn't explain that the best. It typically only happens between 20-40. Any faster and I can't tell from other sounds. I ordered the bushing just hearing other people stories. Nothing more sickening than having a brand new truck with issues. I avoid the dealer on it because even if they agreed to put one in, it would be the same. The dealer has heard of the issue before and of ECGS.

 

Yeah my local dealer sucks, totally denied it was happening, then blamed the lift and axle angles. After showing them the angles were nearly identical to a trd pro, they blamed some mud they noticed and said i mustve tweaked something offroad and they wouldnt look into it any further. Service writers attitude changed after i brought him the pos needle bearing in and dumped it on his desk all stinky and nasty and showed him where ir was wearing my axle because of the slop. Such a difference in the tolerance between the ecgs bushing and the needle bearing

Well I know that I put the lift on so its kinda my issue now. It didn't make the noise until I lifted it so Ill change it and hope it fixes the problem. I hear that some even lifted don't make the noise but I have owned 2 and they both do.

 

man mine made noise even before lift. noticed it first around 2000 miles going up a long steady grade at even throttle. but lifting it made it borderline intolerable. just wish i did it when i had it all apart installing the lift

 

Yes me as well. I did a leveling lift this time instead of a full suspension because I read that likelihood of it doing it would be a lot less. I was wrong. Did it immediately on the way home from the dealership who put the lift on.

 

Same here. Only after I lifted my 2nd and 3rd gen did I get the vibe/noise, did bushing all cured.

 

So i figured id share my experience. I am not super mechanically inclined but I am very well read on the subject and watched a ton of youtube videos beforehand. I lifted my 2016 sport a few months ago and got the vibe. Toyota did not have an answer so they replaced the whole front diff which solved the problem for about 2k miles. I finally grew the balls to do it myself.

I rented most of the necessary tools from autozone loan a tool program (I can not overstate the importance of having the right tools and it doesn't cost anything to rent from autozone (100% refund with return of tools within 90 days))

heres a list of what i rented

35 mm socket
breaker bar
torque wrench
tie rod separator
bearing driver kit
263 dollars total shipped to my house for free and 100% refundable if you return the tools within 90 days which I did today

(The spring compressor was for something else and is not needed FYI)

10 mm allan wrench on a socket driver
ball pien hammer
small sledge hammer
jack stands

standard set of sockets up to 22mm

I bought the $60 needle bearing puller tool and in my opinion it is a must

I used the ECGS recommended gear oil afterwards which i ordered from Amazon (85W-140)

All in all it took me about 4 hours and keep in mind I've only driven about 20 miles since the install but my taco drives like a dream now. Quieter than the day I bought her. Hope this helps anyone with any doubt about doing it yourself. The two hardest parts were seating the removal tool behind the needle bearing and the other was pounding the new ECGS bushing in.

 

^nice write up. Tool rentals can definately make this possible for most people who are fairly handy. A slide hammer would eliminate the need for their removal tool which is a much better tool imo and can get returned like the rest. (80 bucks vs 60 bucks but you can return) and 85w-140 is what ecgs recommends? Seems heavy to me. Think i did 75w90 synthetic
