Right. Most people, myself just as guilty, push their RCs sometimes. My Yeti 380 has an ESC capable of 3s and I'll put one in there. Never looking to see what pinion it should have and be amazed as it hauls ass into an endo from the drag brake. My Bomber would do over 20mph easily. I eventually was ramping it 8' into the air off some dirt piles and destroyed a set of stainless links, MG servo, knuckles, and snapped a front dog bone. All in the name of awesome.

    It happens all the time.

On a brighter note for those crawlers out there. I found a company in NC called CanUdle that make a 4.5" OD/2" ID pool noodle. Perfect for 2.2 bashing and trail riding tire foams. I just cut 5 for my new Bomber and have enough noodle for at least two more sets for only $14.
    IMG_5736.jpg

I cut them wider than my Crawler Innovations Single Stage to fill out the tires more.

The 1/8th buggy. I wanted to build something fast and tough that wouldnt cost a fortune as i dont play with it often. What I really wanted to do was build a real trophy truck. but this will do.

I need to order a metal servo horn before I break the stock plastic. Also want to order some stainless rear wraith links to bring in the wheel base some.

I order servo arms from fleaBay china. I get them 3-4 at a time. Use half of them and eventually lose the rest.

This was a little over a dollar for this color when I ordered.
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/381210208817

I saw a Bomber on RCC today with Twin Hammer trailing arms and the spare in the stock configuration. It looked good but lost some approach angle with the spare. Remove the spare and it'd perform better. I'm considering going this route. Using Wraith links will make it a Wraith and throw off the spring rates some. Nothing that can't be fixed though.

    Trailing Arms in mm
    -Bomber/Yeti 142
    -Wraith Links 126
    -Twin Hammers 116

I'm using an $8 Banggood brushed 21t motor and a $25 HobbyWing crawler ESC so far and liking it. I'm just going to make a new steering link and beat on it with occasional 3s. I scored another Wraith Cage this afternoon to go with the skid and ar60s I've got. I'm out of scx trannies but have a Thunder Tiger tranny that looks the same except with a cam motor mount like the Bomber/Yeti.

I already relocated my spare with the dmg relocate. Much better departure angles.

Currently running a 2s lip. Eventually I'll buy a HH motor and mmx most likely.

DMG makes some good stuff. Run what you want and be happy. I'll eventually go brushless again. The setup I had before was rough on the drivetrain. 2100kV and really tall gearing on 3s. It'd launch like a rocket though. Ima take it easier on this one since I got an Exo Terra finally.

One of the local kids kept breaking the rear arms on his b6 when we were at the track last week lol. Had to get a pic of the damage. These are the optional hard arms.

dagum! since you can't really heat treat plastic hard = brittle. time for some carbon arms if he really wants low flex that much. I've got graphite arms on my B2, and since leaving Houston 2 years ago have only bashed it, (no tracks near me now), and have yet to break one.

is the kid constantly lawn darting it, or is it genuinely a rougher or big air track?

Oh my goodness! I just got the b6d kit and now all the carnage :)

This will be my first RC car kit (I've built airplanes before). I have a laundry list of parts I need of which, a radio is one. I was checking out the Futaba 4PLS. Anything else I should be looking at?

If it matters, I'm building more toward 17.5 since I would be able to race it at the local track.

Most people at my track run the b6, they are very good buggies, but they tend to break easly.

He was just driving too hard for the track size. He was pushing it really hard with his mod car and kept hitting the wall in the same section lol. Hes used to bigger tracks with wider lanes.

Dont worry about it lol just keep the stock plastics on itand you'll be fine.

Airtronics just came out with a new radio that replaces the mt4 i think. Take a look at that. airtronics (or sanwa forget what they're going by these days) seems to be the most common radio used umongst racers, well in california at least, so it may be easier to find help in the pits if you have any issues.

Some great reading on the various radio systems. Thank you for the suggestions!

Watching the Dakar and see the Hilux being driven by Nasser Al-Attiyah-That would be a sweet body for an RC truck :) Or the Peugeot car-that sucker looks bad ass.

    Build thread in sig...
Technical Question! need some help for a "robot" I was just asked to build for work.

background: we are installing extremely high pressure fuel pipe in a natural gas plant, the pipe ranges between 12 and 36 inches inner diameter, and has up to a 1.5'' wall thickness at some locations. we need to visually inspect the inside of the pipe prior to pressure testing it and putting it into service. some of the pipe runs are well over 100 feet long, and have multiple 90 degree elbows.

the engineers in charge of these inspections have a tethered camera, but no way to get it all of the way through the pipe. there are tethered ROVs you can buy for crazy amounts of money, but they don't have 5-10 grand in the budget for that. a couple of them know about my RCs, and approached me about building them something.

the build is easy. low center of gravity crawler with 4 wheel steer and an extended wheelbase. crawler gearing will allow it to easily pull the camera cable, even 100 feet down a pipe, when the drag from the cable will be significant. the long wheelbase and low COG will keep the cord from pulling the vehicle into a wheelie. and the 4 wheel steer will allow it to make the sharp corners, even with the long wheelbase. and of course some lights to assist the camera output quality.

    now the question!
I have some serious doubts about the signal from a 2.4 transmitter penetrating 3/4'' to 1.5'' of solid steel. so my question is, if I were to solder a wire onto the end of the receiver antenna, and zip tie it down the entire length of the camera cable, will I be able to stand at the entrance to the pipe and control the vehicle? essentially a 100 foot antenna that I'd be standing at the end of.

I understand your concept of the long wheel base but essentially if your building a crawler the best bet for keeping the front end down would be using some wheel weights. Also if you have a controller setup that allows it and dual MOA going you could use dig to allow a bit more power to your front.

The extended antenna idea I can't comment so much on but I'd say that essentially It probably wouldn't work as well as you'd hope. I know radio frequencies have X amount of power output and the length of the antenna is decided to stay within the wavelength of the frequency. So you would need to figure out how to calculate what length wire would keep you within the wavelength of 2.4ghz. For the Rx to push that signal all the way down a 100+ ft of wire may be troublesome for it to do and manipulate the wavelength and actually degrade the signal.

IMO opinion you would be better off getting into a MHz frequency such as used with long distance land to air radios for flight. Futaba still makes 72 mhz Tx's that are not too pricey.

Final thought is have you or your work considered using FPV rather than dragging the 100+ ft of camera cable with the rig? You could get a 900mhz or 1.2/3 ghz FPV setup that would penetrate solids decently and give you some range. The world of Radio antennas can get fairly complicated fast with expanding range abilities but there are certainly options out there that I'm sure would still be way under the cost of the later mentioned ROV option.

I wish I had my laptop with me at work I could link you to many websites that I used for my gear before I essentially had to shelf RC due to lack of funds. I have a 1.2/3 ghz setup I picked up pretty cheap used and it works pretty good for land vehicles. Check out rcgroups.com they have a mass of good information and a good buy/sell forum along with rctech having a great buy/sell forum and is usually my top choice for picking up used rc stuff.

You will probably want to read about antennas in the AARL antenna book. The short answer is it probably won't work because of the length of cable you will need to tow.

Why not have a pipe inspection service come inspect the pipe for you?

Couldn't a pigtail be installed on the antenna to lengthen and follow the cord for the camera?
