Yeah you read that right, lets see all your TRD Pro clones, tributes, or whatever else you want to call them. Maybe you didn't want to pay 10k over sticker and lose a moonroof, or didn't want to be limited to 3 colors. Maybe you didnt want to wait on a waiting list, or didn't want to be limited to a DCSB. Whatever the reason, lets make this the definitive TRD Pro clone thread. To keep it informative, I'll also have some handy info here for those wanting to become a Pro-seur too.

I've been wondering if it's even worth cloning a TRD Pro or simply buying one. In short, it's not worth cloning if you are paying MSRP. At it's very core, the closest Tacoma you can get to a Pro is a 2017 TRD Off-Road 4x4 DCSB with the Technology Package, and even more so if it's in either White or Barcelona Red. The MSRP for this truck is:

    Manual Trans: $33,075
    Automatic : $34,705

    Meanwhile, TRD Pro's MSRP is:

Manual Trans: $40,760 (difference of $7,685)
    Automatic : $42,760 (difference of $8,055)

So let's see what it takes to turn them into Pro's. I've broken these differences down to 3 key parts and will add all the part numbers and best prices I have found online.

Performance Upgrades - Adding these parts should make your TRD OR 4x4 operate and perform just like a Pro. This is the meat and potatoes of the Pro. $4,997

    • TRD Pro Fox Shocks/Coilovers (PTR61-35170-LF[RF, LR, RR]) $3,170
    • TRD Cat Back Exhaust (ACLB/DCSB PTR03-35161)(DCLB PTR03-35162) $700
    • Rigid Industries Fog Lights w/ Bezels (PT228-35170-AA [AB, BA, BB]) $540
    • TRD Pro Skid Plate (PTR60-35160) $407
    • 30mm Sway Bar w/ Bushings (48811-04130)(48815-04080) $163/$17
Comfort Upgrades - Adding these interior pieces will give you the same feel as if you were truly driving inside a gen-u-ine Pro. $250
Cosmetic Upgrades - This is all fluff, but adding these parts (along with the skid and fogs) will make your truck appear to be a Pro in every way, except when they see that additional moonroof and your Bilsteins. $4,854

So far it'll take about $10,101 to turn a TRD OR 4x4 into a complete Proseur. This is not counting the leather interior and floor mats, and you can estimate another $300-$500 to have a bodyshop paint your hood to match your truck. This can easily jump up another $500-$1000 dollars easily. You can also recoup some money by selling your old parts. You can also build a better Pro if you opt for 17x8 FN Wheels (cheaper, and way more tire options) and aftermarket exhaust like Magnaflow or Hooker. There are also better floor mats options out there. You can also see if your $3000 can buy you better suspension. You'll lose some Proseur points, but you'll have a better truck. Other Tacoma trims will also be missing bigger, irreplaceable options like Tilt and Incline displays, Crawl Control, MTS, and ATRAC. And if you want a Tacoma in Cement, you can only get that with a Pro. Now let's see the clones!

Instead of calling them Poseurs, I'm calling them Proseurs. Not that I have anything against them, I actually have parts of my own. I just want to see everybody's Pro clone. The Pro parts thread is 100+ pages long, I know they're out there. This is intended for those who are trying to clone a Pro, regardless of the Cab, Bed, or Trim. It's for guys who want more than just the heritage grill.

if you were going to buy a truck and mod it why would you use oem parts? just saying for the money i know theres far better options out there. saw someone trying to get 3500 for front pro shock assy's. there are WAY better options out there for that kinda money IMO. any whose adding all that? the idea of building a truck is pick what you like and leave out the rest. pro badges and wheels? wouldnt trade my sport wheels for pro's unless they were tossing in a fair amount of cash

I think a good amount of people like the OEM look and aren't trying to go so extreme, and like the idea of Toyota manufacturing the parts. With that said, the shocks aren't even the Pro part flying off the shelves, plenty of people buying the shift knobs, grills, and lights. I think if you've 3 or more Pro parts, you just might be a Proseur. I'd love to see some Access Cabs, DCLB's, or some non Pro colors like quicksand all decked out in Pro parts.

Aftermarket parts can be good, but there's something to be said for OEM quality, fitment, and reliability. Genuine OEM parts on the vehicle also tend to be better for resale value than a cobbled-together combination of aftermarket parts.

$3500 for the TRD Pro front shocks is out of touch with reality. Unless I'm missing something, you can buy all four brand new for less than that, and that's just using the first Google result for the part numbers above.

    I'll say this again...
TRD Pro costs more, but will hold its value proportionally better due to limited release- especially in Cement given its singular availability on the Pro.

The choice of a Pro for me was more of a financial decision than it's appearance and features. I know you could build something equivalent, or even better, for a bit cheaper, but bolt ons don't add to relative value, you pretty much have to give them away or part out prior to resale.

this was the original plan to choose a Pro rather than build from OR up. i was just thinking that one day i may sell the truck. but as i looked further into the truck i want to actually live in for some years, i decided the Pro trim level was also worth buying. now that i have the truck i'm happy with the investment side of things and am keeping her mostly stock for that -- which is not a compromise for my use -- but now i'll never let go because the 6MT is so magic for me. at least i know that if MT's disappear i am already set with a great truck.

id argue aftermarket parts are often times higher quality. OE part manufacturers have to make a part last at least as long as the warranty period for as little money as possible. many aftermarket parts carry lifetime warranties. example: spicer makes u joints for toyota to toyota specs. they are warrantied for 5year/60k under powertrain warranty. buy the "same" u joint from spicer and its warrantied for life. because that "same" u joint is made to a quality standpoint and not a budget. think there would be as many u joint issues if toyota went for the top quality one from the start?

Before this thread devolves into another argument, why not post some pics of clones as the OP intended.

Dude, there's not a "high quality" line and "just good enough for Toyota" line at the spicer plant. They all run on the same line but Toyota can only feasibly warranty a whole powertrain (and all its components) for a limited time.

Spicer only makes the U joint, and so their logistics are far easier to offer lifetime warranties on a U-joint. It's because what you do to claim the warranty is mail them a busted u-joint, not drive in their bay and have their techs assess the problem, order the necessary parts, etc etc.

Don't underestimate greed and gouging. Remember when the PRO grille first came out there were price shocks up to like $600 or more.
Meanwhile I'm the bottom feeder hoovering up TRD OR parts for a few hundo here and there.:D

as a guy who does parts for a living, im about 98% certain they come off different lines. atleast thats how moog does it. and denso. and bosch. and ngk. even tire companies often make special tires for manufacturers which are close but not identical. you can buy a michelin pss2 or a michelin porsche pss2. some even do specific stuff for aftermarket companies that sell their products. premium guard makes our filters but they make them to our specs and price point. and its cheaper than their branded filters. think they are doing custom work just for kicks and losing money?

company i work for doesnt carry spicer or id have a definitive answer

I mean I could be totally wrong, but I worked in the parts industry too a while back (at a supplier) and it seemed like most of the time it was all the same shit but just in different boxes. Like literally, the same line would get dropped into different boxes with different P/N's...

Also even the "China mystery brand" crap was sometimes made on the same tooling, just with the "official" casting marks hit with a die grinder before shipping. Some sketchy shell game shit if you ask me.

I'm not trying to knock any real Pro's, I just understand that some people may not want them for various reasons. Me, I want an access cab with the 6 foot bed, but I still love the Pro and don't knock anyone driving one. This is simply for us non Pro people to source the parts, without digging through the Pro Parts thread, and seeing other people's clones. This is not meant to be a pissing match between aftermarket grills and lift kits. Now let's see the trucks!

Most people buy a pro grill because the stock ones aren't that appealing. Some people buy rigid LEDs from the pro. Few buy tail lights. Nobody buys the suspension.

An TRD OR is the way to go. You can fully deck it out at the dealer and install better suspension yourself.

Traded in a Limited Tundra with a bunch of things I never used. Definitely didn't want leather seats again. Got this black DCLB with Sport trim. Love the look of the cement and white Pros. The wheels and grill are the only pro mods I'll be doing. Suspension will be aftermarket and I plan to add homelink, just not on the mirror.
