Only happens in 4wd. Cracking like rocks. Pretty much what a blown CV joint might sound like, but how could it be a CV if it only happens in 4wd? Wouldn't it happen all the time? It's coming from the from right side behind the wheel. Any thoughts?

That's what I thought. A friend was saying it would do it in 2wd if it was a cv joint, but its coming bad from the right front side and there is nothing else i can think of.

a bad cv joint is likely the problem/noise. they are quiet in 2wd because there is no torque being applied to the joint (they're free-wheeling). when the hub is engaged and the axle shaft tries to rotate the wheel the joint makes a popping/cracking noise.. if the boot is ripped open and the grease has flung out the axle needs to be replaced. they can also make noise even when the boot is intact and all the grease is still packed in..

YA, I think so too. I'm ordering the part monday. Such a pain in the ass to fix though.
