Has anyone tapped into and extended their usb plug from the factory location to the center console?

My ipod is always plugged into the usb port and i use the touch screen to control my music selections. I want to put a new usb port in my center console so my ipod and cable isnt bouncing around the storage areas.
Would a new usb port work the same as the factory port for controlling my ipod?

    Thanks

Don't tap into the existing just run and add a totally new separate one. You can find what you need on Amazon. Search 12v to 5 amp USB. You'll get many options full kits around 20 bucks

And installing a separate one will still allow my ipod to connect to the head unit?

Well thats what i want. I want to be able to keep my ipod in the center console and still be able to control my music from the head unit. Installing a new separate usb would not allow me to do that. Thats why i asked if tapping into the existing factory usb would allow both usb plugs to connect to the head unit.

Not really. Im assuming you are only using your new usb outlet for charging and not for connecting an ipod to the head unit for music.

Easiest way to test this is just get an extension from Best Buy or any other place and plug it into the factory port. Then plug your apple cable in and see. I know that lengthening cables and adding resistance with aftermarket head units (especially if let's say android auto and apple CarPlay units) will sometimes not allow it. Just an easy trial and error. I would also recommend not using super cheap cables.
Good luck and keep us posted

I did it. I unplugged the factory plug and put it behind the radio. Plugged in a 4 port data and power USB hub. Just run an extension off of that to your center console. Then I used a panel mount aux kit and mounted it into a blank that I bought off eBay. I then reused the factory cover for the aux input. If you go this route just don't plug more than one data device into the hub as it will interfere with the data connection as the radio can only handle one. To avoid this only use one data capable USB plug(for the iPod), and use power only for all other accessories.

I just put a piece of electrical tape over the USB lettering.

I plan on switching to the older model aux only plug soon.

Edit: This is the USB mount I used in my glove box, but would look pretty clean in the center console. Just drill a hole and pop it in.

Edit again: this is the hub I used.

If you have any questions let me know.

No problem and I sure don't. I did this mod before I started really doing write ups or anything. It's pretty simple though.
First remove the AC panel and radio. Here's a good write up for that.
Then remove the factory usb/aux plug. You can do this by carefully pulling on the cover that says usb/aux or try to reach behind it and push it out from behind.
    Then unplug the USB plug.
Reroute the wire up and behind the radio the best you can. It can just sit out of the way back there.
Then plug back in the factory USB input behind the radio. If you want to run the aux plug to a factory blank like I did, you'll need something like this. Then you'll need a factory blank for that location. I may have a spare. I'll check but if not I it's only about $5 from the dealership.
Then you mount the aux blank into the panel and you can reuse the factory usb/aux cover. Then run your data and power capable USB extension to the center console. You can either just run it into the console or use something like the mount I linked before to clean it up.

And and the center console is removed by a few bolts under the carpet in the console and the shifter knob unscrews and the panel around it simply pulls up.

Sounds good. A lot of the parts can actually be found at either Walmart, best buy, or local auto parts stores..or Amazon prime haha
