I gotcha. You know, I'm not sure how/if it works the same for the 4cyl, I've personally only seen it on a 6cyl. I'd assume the process would be about the same. And nothing to worry about leaving it open on the road. You still have you air filter to do it's job. I moved south from the bay area and heard traffic has been getting WAY worse. I used to commute 17 -> 880 into santa clara which started to get really bad ~4 years ago.

It's still really bad. Lately the knocked down the center median on 880 and they're building one that's 6 feet tall so people won't rubberneck and be blinded by headlights anymore.

Won't help the fact that everyone forgets how to drive when it starts raining though haha.

Here's a pic of the Bay Area the one day of the year when it rains:

trd or stock are the only ones that are c.a.r.b leagal and the only one that are a true cai. don't waste your time with anything else. they don't do much for power or mpg. if you really want to change it for your own liking then go trd. I like mine seems to keep it more factory. and compared to k&n gets better filtration and maintains factory mpg

No doubt that factory or TRD are the best options for "performance"
OP and Bart were asking for sound.

oh I see. I didn't read everything just the tittle of the thread. if you want a good sound then k&n is good. just change it back every 2 years. I got tired of doing that.

Did they even make those for 1st gens? I know TRD started in my model year ('98) but I don't know if they came with those options.

Nope, at least if your smog tech knows what he is doing. I have two boxes, my modded one and my stock one. Stock goes in, pass smog, modded one goes back.

Aw damn really? Why would it not pass smog if you had the cover on?

I tried, but the smog tech said that the air cleaner box "must be unmodified" and any attempts to seal it would not pass, since it makes no mention of repairs being acceptable.

I think that perhaps that a new smog tech that doesn't know his stuff might pass it but the guy I had was a pro.

I guess it depends on the shop and tech. I asked around on my regional forum and people said if they kept the cover on and the tech wasn't taking a really close look at the airbox you would pass.

I was looking at picking up this intake: K&N 57-9012 FIPK Performance Air Intake System

And according to K&N Intakes themselves, they state:

"K&N Intake Kits, Are They Street Legal?
Every kit we sell is street legal in most states. California and other states that have adopted California emission standards require an intake system to be inspected by the California Air Resources Board (CARB)."

Are you sure ALL aftermarket intakes aren't CARB certified? Seems like K&N intakes at least are CARB certified.

I ordered their 57-9012, looks like K&N's '57' series is CARB certified according to this CA Gov document.

"IT IS ORDERED AND RESOLVED: That the installation of the Filtercharger Injection Performance Kit, manufactured and marketed by K&N Engineering, Inc., 561 Iowa Avenue, Riverside, California 92502 has been found not to reduce .the effectiveness of the applicable vehicle pollution control system and, therefore, is exempt from the prohibitions of Section 27156 of the Vehicle Code for the Acura, Honda, Chrysler, Ford, Mitsubishi, Toyota, and GM vehicles listed in Exhibit A."

Sonnuvabitch, they musta changed things, ive never seen this intake when i leveraged a shop to sell me the non carb intake 2yrs ago.

    57-9025

And before anyone warns me of the intake, no i dont run it...i used it for testing of intake temps, then immediatley sold the pos, and cleaned my maf sensor and throttle body.

According to their document, their 57 series was CARB certified on January 27th, 2000. 17 years ago.

K&N does state some of their air intakes are not legal in California, but many of them are since they're CARB certified.
