3rd Gen Remote Start Using OEM Remote

Ah well there you have it. Maybe once remote start is a factory option for 3rd gens they will have a reflash available for the ECU that will allow for the take over.

That makes sense too, I think it's worth a try and maybe get in the car and tap the PTT before pressing the brake? Although that may really confuse the system. Just thinking out loud

 

If that proves to be true and doesn't (potentially) cause a bunch of other issues, he's sitting on a mint. Do post back what you learn.

... though that kills the idea at least for me. I don't need to carry a keyring, so adding a 2nd fob completely blows the convenience factor of the smartkey for me.

Good luck with that. Toyota's factory remote start on other PTS vehicles kills the ignition when you open the door.

Unless your trying to impress someone, I don't think pushing the start button one more time when you get in will be a big deal. The main point is the engine is warmed up, and likely your bum too.

 

Me too, I'm a single fob kinda guy. I can't stand a bulky set of keys.

 

To put this in perspective:

The truck being warm helps make my dear wife happy when we're out together and it's chilly.

She didn't care that I had to press the Start button before I installed a remote start, and she still doesn't care that I have to press the Start button after. She *does* care that she's not cold. And THAT, my dear friends, is worth it.

Oh and as for impressing someone... Starting my truck from my watch does that job pretty well.

I was hoping to find one that did that as well but ended up just getting one
installed on Saturday. Strange that many manufacturers will keep the vehicle
running when the door is open if they sense the key fob where others won't. I
know both Ford & Dodge do NOT shut the vehicle off when the door is opened.

On those makes along with Nissan and Infiniti when they are remote started they stay on acc. Then with you get in the car and hit the start button again it switched to on reading the key in your pocket as if you were starting it for the first time.After that you hit the brake which kills the remote start and your good to go

 

Installed my remote start today from KB Voodoo great product and straightforward directions. I ended up soldering all the connections which is what I thought was going to be the hardest part. For me the hardest part was stripping the wires because I wanted to make sure I didn't cut any of the wires in the strand. When it was all said and done it took me about 3 hours and only because I checked the wires I was taping into about 12 times like a psychopath to confirm I had the right ones. I followed the directions to the letter and it worked first time as intended. The job seemed a little intimidating for an electronics novice like myself but turned out to be easy.

Exactly! Basic rule is once you have full oil pressure, you're good to go. Exception being a diesel where you really should warm it up till there is a difference in air temp. Most folks looking to make this mod are guys like me who occasionally find themselves working in extremely cold environments where a warm and defrosted truck would be very welcome on those mornings. The second start is very negligible wear on the starter and your battery isnt going to care.

 

I had a chance to install mine last night, hardest part was getting that lower panel (by your left foot) out haha. First broken clip, RIP . I do electrical work for a living and found splicing and taping (solder is this weekend's project) much easier than using the taps, but maybe that's just me.

I'd say it took me about 3 hours as well, but I did taps with no luck first and just went back and re-did it with splices. It may have been too cold when I was working with the wires and taps, it didn't properly cut through the insulation.

Works absolutely perfectly now, and it was great to have a warm truck this morning. One little quirk I've noticed is the lock functionality; if the timer runs out, you have to press unlock on the fob(no proximity or handle unlock), however if the truck is still running it works as it normally does (when it's off and in my driveway) so I can just reach for the handle.

yeah, that kick panel was a pita the first time I took it off. Ended up with sore fingers but that was probably due to the cold weather I was trying it in.

As for the second part, the little ridge tab on the top of the handle works if you don't feel like getting the fob out. You'll need to either touch the tab twice or touch the tab and then use the sensor strip inside the handle.

 

Yeah, that's usually how I get in is with the sensor inside the handle. It didn't work...but then again I do have a nice chunk of ice on the top of that. I'll try again later, but I was thinking it may be similar to when/if you use the valet key to lock your doors, the fob no longer works until you unlock with the key.

What good does it do to lock/unlock with my phone? If I don't want to use the fob I don't want to use my phone either. IT'S 2017 I'LL USE MY ARMS WHEN I'M GOOD AND READY!
