ok ok, I can't help but be the government conspiracist guy. No need to spy on people, they buy these listening devices and put them in home themselves.

"people shouldn't have a reasonable expectation that their data is off limits when a third-party company holds it."

This is my problem with this. This is the argument that has been used by the government so far with things like phone records, texts, etc., with some success. Now they're potentially saying they don't need a warrant to bug your home if you have one of these devices, because if the audio gets uploaded to the company's server, you are voluntarily giving up any expectation of privacy. Not to mention that the company could essentially do whatever it wanted to with the data, or an unscrupulous employee could. Until the law gets better, I really don't see how being too lazy to use my hands to give instructions to play music or my eyes to find out the time is worth allowing any number of people to listen to a permanent bug inside my house.

Good luck with that. After years of working in electronic intelligence gathering and law enforcement, I can definitively say that virtually everyone has something to hide, even if they don't think they do. If you don't think so, ask a lawyer. Your interpretation of what you say and do is often not the same as that of others, especially when they don't have the complete picture, and their interpretations can cause you a $#!t ton of trouble. That's why a lawyer will also tell you not to talk to the police in many circumstances, even if you know you don't have anything to hide. No one in their right mind would ever voluntarily give uncontrolled access to an always-open microphone in their home, especially for nothing more than the extremely trivial novelty of using voice commands to do things you could just as easily do without them. Have a minor argument with someone who then has something bad happen to them, say something disparaging about a coworker to a family member and then later have a problem at work, make a comment that someone considers racist/sexist/etc., and then later be accused of sexual harassment or discrimination or some other form of related misconduct, and then have these private conversations in your own home, possibly comments or words completely out of context, trotted out in public or court, and you'll suddenly find out just how much you have to hide. Seen that kind of thing happen more than once. Most people will be lucky enough to not have these problems. But I can guarantee you that many will, and regret having one of these devices in their home.
