Is there anyway I can replace that 8 inch sub with something else without me having to replace my head unit?

Yes you can. I replaced mine with a 8 inch RF punch subwoofer.

How much better is that RF? Was it just a swap or do you need something else? I know some people said that you need like a converter or something so that the sub and head unit communicate.

The RF was way better. Deeper sounding lows. The OEM sub is dual coil so make sure whatever you buy is also. I couldn't find wire leads that will convert the OEM wires to the sub so I just cut them.

So it was basically just a clean swap and you just put in the new one?

Other than cutting the end of the factory wires, yes. The 8 inch RF punch fits right into the sub box Toyota uses.

    Hey bear263,
Is this the model number? Rockford Fosgate Punch HX2 RFD2208 dual voice coil
    Crutchfield says no longer available.
Your old radio is still working fine.
    Hows the roof?

Hey what's up othater? This is the original one I bought: http://www.rockfordfosgate.com/products/details/p3sd4-8

I have since made my own sub box and put a p3sd4-10 in it.

Roof is still holding strong. No leaks. Thanks for asking. Also great to hear radio is going strong.
