It should say on the automatic transmission dipstick. I have an 04 Tacoma DC 4x4 auto and mine says to use Toyota Type 4 fluid. People on here mostly say to do a drain & fill rather than a complete flush. Since it could loosen up stuff and plug up your lines.

I did just a drain and fill, then a few months later a drain and fill again. It's not perfect, but it's easy and not messy. Then in about 30k, drain and fill again.

I dropped pan at 200k and washed it out really good. Surprisingly it was pretty clean. Going to do a drain and refile at 250k.

I did a Trans flush at 97k and put in Max Life ATF and my DC shifts like a dream. I'm gonna probably continue the flush cycle in the future to stay on top of a smooth running trans.

Hey guys when you switched over to the max life, did you do a full 11-13 quarts drain then flush and then add the 3.2 quarts plus filter? I'm having problems when turning that my transmission is slipping out of gear and to neutral than a couple seconds later catching again. You think it maybe just a little low?

I just drain and fill every once and awhile with it. Never did do any flushing. Flushing is bad

If you pull the pan and clean it out and then flush its ok. If you flush first you stir up all the sediment in the pan.

Awesome thanks 757yotas and mechanicjon, I did exactly what you said mechanicjon I think I'm just low a little bit. Do one of you have a 4.0 by chance? If so how many quarts do you put in? I put in what Haynes told me and it was roughly over 3 quarts

FSM fill instructions. Sounds low on trans fluid.

Yep I was a quart too low, shifts like butter on a knife now. Also this valvoline max life is way better than the WS fluid!

Just have noticed a difference when shifting gears also going from park, neutral, drive and down to 2L the truck doesn't want to hesitate and then jump off the line when it catches the gears. The truck just shifts smoothly now.

And by all means my transmission fluid when I drained, it was still a nice clear red so it was not looking like it desperately needed changing.

There's been some studies done on it. Lots of info in the trans section
