ok, so as the auto trans goes thru gears the tac should hold solid RPM, if this were the case what sense would there be for Tacometer in the truck. if I floor the accelerator the RPMS jump up drastically the tac shows this as the truck moves forward and shifts gears it doesn't stay at a solid RPM, just trying to get from what I see as I accelerate on my tac

The tach should rev up as the speed is increasing in a gear, then, when it is time to shift gears, the tach should only show a drop in RPMs during the shift. It should not rev up and then slam into the next gear (like popping a clutch). Then the tach will rise up again, as you accelerate in the gear you are now in.

I will have to look at it, I have the 4 speed auto not a 6 speed new one and it searchs gears under certain circumstances like climbing hills inclines and sometimes in Cruise but I always considered it normal for an auto trans nothing that concerned me as far as a malfunctioning trans

It sounds to me like your transmission is doing what it is supposed to do.

yes I think so, I think as another guy posted is that now you have 2 extra gears in the trans. and the truck wants to find the optimum gear for performance/mpgs it has more selections and therefore maybe an impression on constantly searching, that would be a guess, I would assume all the TSBs for this is Toyota trying to satisfy owners who are seeing this as annoying, but in the end there is probably nothing more they can do about the shift points

Correct. The only thing that would have worked a little better is if the ratio of 5th gear was a little shorter (closer to 1:1); perhaps about .85:1, or some ratio around there. The jump from 4th to 5th is a little steep for a 4400 pound truck with low engine torque at the lower RPMs.

only thing too another angle is that if folks drove the truck thoroughly before they bought it they should have noticed the hard shifting and the constant searching at that time they could have declined buying the truck, I mean paying over 40k for the truck I surely would have taken it thru some driving scenarios in order to make sure this is a vehicle that I would like to own even with its short comings, theres always gives and takes nothing is 100% perfect so you have to weight the options before purchasing not after the fact, if it searchs gears before you buy it, it will search after you buy it

so why are these owners so angry about the transmission not shifting to their satisfaction, when in fact they test drove the truck and they should have noticed these inconsistencies before they purchased it?? sounds like they should blame themselves for buying it, instead of after the fact complaining

^^good question! I tested mine for a good long drive, using all options-s mode, ect, and D. I determined it satisfactory. Only issue I had with it was it developed problems a couple months later on from low fluid, but getting fluid topped off and tsb applied solved my issues. Now it's fun to drive.

I know when I did my forced test drive of the auto, I did the dealerships mile, mile and a half loop. Maybe some dealers will only allow this. Before I signed for my ordered 17 manual, I put about 20 miles on it, some highway, some city, and some in the field. When I returned my sales guy was where did you go, I responded around. He was not happy.

that's what im talking about, I bought a used 2013 and I looked it over and test drove if at that time if I noticed any hard shifting or other things I would have walked, if I bought with these things I knew they were there, my fault I have to own it

Yup! I told my salesman I was taking it on a good long drive, and if there were any driveability issues, dents, etc. then I was getting my deposit back and hitting the dusty trail. I crawled under it, looked under the hood, checked everything out. I probably drove him nuts, but I didn't care, I'm paying and he's not. Needless to say, I bought it!

I was concerned about buying a 4 cylinder/auto tranny combo, so I test drove some hills, inclines, highway, back roads till I concluded I can live with this, after the fact complaining about lack of power or searching trans is ridiculous cause I test drove it before I bought it so the onus is on me, I could have walked away from it

It will be interesting to see if toyota would end up doing this with future models if the problems consists.

It seems like most of these tsbs are like bandaids, not completely fixing the issue. Seems better at first, but then the problem comes back.
