Wood Pecker is quite the undertaking if you guys are seriously considering it... I think @RPS1030 was pretty close with rig requirements, I might even step it up to a 35 minimum. We rolled up to it like 4 years ago by mistake on the day that one dude rolled his rig out by Florence. Not impossible, but some serious thought needs to go into the trucks you bring.

This jives with what I saw on it about a year ago. Gate keeper now has a smooth dirt road next to it. Several other play lines are intact, but bypassed for miner access. We got a near stock FJC through with a semi novice driver.

This is what I was told, that gate keeper is tough, and the rest is fairly mellow. The guy I work with does alot of wheelin, and said he would take my truck through there without hesitation.... and I almost didnt even finish my sentence..... It would suck to get out there and find out other wise though..... or get into a situation where it gets rougher and rougher with no turn around.... @Blender, if you guys do a trial run, whats the chances of an open seat my friend!?

Is FR-42 open? I ran it a few times in my jeep years ago. Super fun trail but tough with open diffs. Traction is tough to come by in that gravel.

I've also done upper and lower woodpecker but again, years ago. Upper had a bypass that wasn't too bad. I did the hard line and ended up with a crushed driver door and smashed in driver side rear corner. Definitely not doable in a truck.

42 was being worked on by a group on ih8mud. We discussed checking it out after the summer was over. I haven't been back there since way before the fires. Probably 2001.

Same here. I sold my Jeep in 2003 so it would've been around the same time that I was there. Watching those videos of the Land Cruisers, it looks like it's going to be even more challenging than it used to be. It's fun and can be challenging without the risk of damage.

For the Table Mesa area do you all have a permit and vehicle decal? I've read they are necessary. I've got a Tennessee plate and am not sure about the decal.

Anyways, are the trails labeled when I get there? Would anyone want to show me some trails in late February? I'll be headed through AZ then.

Okay, so BLM is good. I'll have to watch my gps and signs to stay on it. I have 31.5" KO2s, 3.5" lift with good suspension, and I'm all armored up and have recovery gear. I'm good to do some decently technical trails but no rock crawling. I'd like to see some neat history and landscape. It'd be awesome if we could get a few people out for a day trip!

Tip Top Mine looks like a really good trail. Thanks for the suggestion. Would there happen to be any trails to take me from exit 236 through the trails and Crown King area and end up on hwy 69? I'm headed north through Sedona (Broken Arrow trail) and into Utah after.

You can continue across the old Senator Highway down into Prescott and head up to Jerome, cottonwood and into Sedona. After that you can head up the switchbacks to Flagstaff and out the 40.

Thanks for all the tips. Here's the route I'm looking at. Might do a near whole loop (I've got a friend to return to ASU). I've got BCC, Crown King, Turkey Creek, Tip Top Mine, and some others.

If anyone from Tucson has good info on local trails that would be awesome. I haven't done enough of any of them to provide good input but once I get back from Colombia, I plan on hitting several (once I have sliders and whatnot)

Crown King and the surrounding area is of particular interest to me...as it has a lot of mining history and links to some of the trail history here in the California deserts...specifically the Bradshaw family and their trail here and Isaac's burial site in Arizona.

Cool stuff man, I appreciate all the research you have compiled.

The backway to crown king trail is an complete goat rope, avoid it like the plague on weekends for sure, or be swamped by a crowd of retards and side by sides... I can't stand either one. But you're right, the general area has history and some interesting points of interest.

Alright guys, a Little update on a trail that has been discussed quite a few times in here and most have shy'd away or getting a group together that have the trucks to do it and help each other has been tough.

I went and did the trail with my father, and my uncle who both have wranglers. (Both jeeps are locked front and rear, on 33's, Front and rear bumpers and skid plates)

My personal truck is a 1st gen tacoma, geared, locked front and rear, on 33's, sliders, front bumper, and 6" high clearance bumper.

I apologize if this post is a little wordy, but I want to try and give a good description for those who have wondered about it. Came in off US60 and mineral mountain road, and came out off cottonwood canyon at the flagpole on Highway 79. Pavement to Pavement was 830AM-ish to 4-ishPM. This included making a trail sandwich, obstacle heckling, and removing a broken rear shock from my dad's Jeep.

    Wood Pecker as of 12/1/2017.

As soon as you turn into the beginning of the trail, it has two options, the left side is pretty flexed out, and you could have potential roof scrapage. (there is paint all over the left side of the gulley where people have scraped quite a bit.) I took the right side and it was pretty flexed out still, and I actually slid of my line and was hung up for a bit trying to work my way to traction.

I did not do the "firehole" obstacle, its big risk if something happens, although, I would like to see someone do it who has done it before so I can see their approach. However, even though my truck is not my DD and is a toy, it was too gnarly for me. I took the by pass. **This is the only bypass I allowed my self to take on the entire trail.**

After that, there are lots of obstacles and fun things. There is a section where its kind of a squeeze/ slight u bent turn, or an up and over on the left. (kind of similar to the one on elvis, except the up and over is possible for tacomas, and the squeeze is a little longer as you have to follow the bends in the rock walls on your right.) up and over on the left was a good challenge, and the squeeze on the right was cool too as it was a bit off camber. The bypass for this section is pretty gnarly coming down the big hill as its off camber with 2 good sized steps in it.(12-18") that one wheel drops down at a time. Slow and steady is the name of that game.

Most of the big obstacles on the trail have by passes. HOWEVER many of the bypasses are washed out, dug out, and V-notched. Many are extremely tippy, and would take some spotting just to get through the bypass, at least for me to feel comfortable anyways. I didnt inspect ALL of the bypasses, but I looked at a few of them in passing where I could see from the bottom on the main trail.

    **OVERALL THOUGHTS**

Lots of shelves, and big obstacles on this one. There are not a lot of breaks during this trail, even the easy spots are pretty heavy boulder type fields with steps mixed in.. You can only get a truck and trailer to the beginning of the trail, so if you break down towards the end, you're coming all the way back through to get help/get it loaded up. A spare CV is MANDATORY. this trail that required me to do some crab-legging to get through with out just smashing my under carriage quite a few times. The shelf road on the way out, is pretty gnarly on its own with some big uphill steps. The obstacles were a lot of fun though, and I wasn't constantly worried about body damage, but the possibility is there ALOT. I used every piece of armor I have here and there.

It was a good match for my truck, a shorter wheelbase like a T4R would be a fun setup. Overall if you're looking to do the trail for the trail I would say 33-35's, sliders, front bumper, skid plates(my front stock one took a beating from sliding around on a few obstacles), rear locker minimum, (my front locker is always engaged in 4wheel drive so im not sure how it is without the front pulling full bore on some of the big stuff). I think this would be a lot of fun for some of the guys like @stumbles, @Blender, @4Running Daily , you don't need the craziest rig, but the ability to understand that sometimes things just go wrong, or you slide around and things happen, would be important. especially if you want to really play on the bigger obstacles, there are easy lines, but I know most of us into that type of trail are not out there just to find the easy way. Worst case scenario is you take the bypasses, or turn around and come back out if you are over your head, just know that you're at that point before your stuck or broken...that goes with any trail though. Overall it was a fun playground for my rig and had some nice challenges without being terrible.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8IEnQhnfAM&t=4s This video shows it pretty similar to what I saw, maybe a little less dug out in some spots and others a little more filled in.
