Interesting idea. I think you'll have a fair bit of overhang on either side. The 165 is ~67" wide and I think the width of the bed is 55" (if I remember right). The top of the cab should be similar, so you'll be sticking out a few inches.

 

I found the picture of the guy in the CVT group buy who is doing the same thing, hard to tell how it looks closed since he didn't have a picture. Yes the tent is 65-67 wide and I thought the truck is 75 but must be at the fenders.

 

Just an FYI. I have a Leer 100RCC and the top of the cap is only 47" wide to have zero overhang. I recently made a rack for it and at 47" it lined up perfectly.

 

Yes, 75 at the fenders. Good idea, but I think you'd want to go with a smaller tent

 

I'm just wondering if besides looks is there any issues doing it this way? I think the tent would still have plenty of support. I have to check my cap but I think my bars are around 50in or so.

 

Alright everyone. I need your help. I Plan on pulling the trigger on a RTT before spring. I have a major dilemma though. My better half and I are very passionate canoe paddlers. We both have solo canoes that are used frequently together. Any ideas or suggestions for transporting canoes with a rooftop tent will be greatly appreciated. We do not want to trailer the canoes. Preferably strap to the roof. This is my current setup.

 

If you use a bed rack instead of the cap you can still put a canoe on the roof rack. I can't find any pictures but that's how I haul my canoe around

 

Hello this is my first post after lurking for about a year...

I am planning on using this promo code to acquire a Mt. Rainer RTT hopefully this weekend. My question is for some experienced campers that use an RTT and have young kids.

My daughter is 2 and my wife and I are wondering how kid friendly these tents are and how can we ensure she doesn't take a tumble from that high up. I am planning on a cab high bed rack, but may do bed rails if the group thinks it would be more safe until the kiddo is older. Thanks for all your help in advance!!

 

I dont have kids but i do have 10's of weekends of use in my tent so i'll say this, the entrance to the tents can be zipped closed be it a mosquito net or the actual canvas material can be tied down as well. I'll say with certainty that it's EXTREMELY unlikely the kiddo will be able to undo the door opening and fall out, that and you can just sleep in front of the closed opening.

EDIT: if you plan on adding an annex in the future i'd go with a taller bed rack vs. the low profile one, you'll lose some functionality with the low profile having your tent lower to the ground.

 

Not exactly like that, but look back page 500, #9981 and you'll see how mounted my RTT over the tailgate.

 

How long are the canoes?

 

I have 5 canoes. Mostly use solo 14 footers.

 

Switch to kayaks and get a tundra

 

Had a 2012 Tundra and traded for my 2016 Tacoma. Not a fan of kayaks. I've had them, I've used them, I prefer canoes.

 

Is the cap necessary? You could go to Mobtown bed bars like I have, you can see them in the post quoted above. You could use a load extender (Not pictured, link below) to support the back of the canoes.

This one can be used for extended loads out the back or turned vertical to support loads at roof height.

I went with Odin Designs..He has the best zippers..piping, diamond plate floor, all the nicest stuff. And cheaper than the big boys
