Hey guys, think I may have made a boo-boo!
We got a few inches of snow here yesterday, so naturally while out and about I found an empty parking lot and cut loose a little.
After coming out of a tight, 4wd cookie I immediately noticed a smell, and had no power steering. Home was only a couple miles away, got home and popped the hood. Fluid everywhere, obviously hit the belt and threw it everywhere.
Waited for the truck to dry overnight and took another look at it this morning. The pump itself is covered in fluid, nothing appears to be coming from/wrong with the rack (thankfully!).
I visually verified that all the lines appear to be connected, although I didn't look at them close enough to see a possible crack/rupture. It's a mess down there!

Anyhow, I just as well figured I'm probably just out a new pump. But before I make a trip down to the parts store, does anyone have any insight? Is this a common failure or is it more likely a line failed? Surprisingly it isn't THAT low on fluid, maybe an inch below the fill line in the reservoir. I can't find much info on the pump itself "rupturing", but I'm guessing it popped at the seem of the pump itself, splitting the pump momentarily from the stress on it?

You have to pay to play I 'spose!

If you had the steering wheel locked left or right for too long it over stresses the pump.

Subbing, I was just burning 2wd burnouts in an empty lot last week! :)

    Why were you in 4wd?

Never heard the term 4wd cookie. Is that the same as doing donuts but in 4wd?

Admittedly it was locked in one direction, for too long, with the skinny peddle pretty well buried.

Hard to get those tight, fast circles in 2WD. Genius I am!

Yeah, no reason to do 4wd brodies/doughnuts/cookies. Lots of stress on components that way. Now with an AWD vehicle that's a different story. I used to spin axis doughnuts in my WRX STI all the time.

Have you checked the fuses? Might have just blown a fuse and could have just burped some fluid. Cracked line you wouldnt have any in the tank

Ok, I'm up to date on the Terms :dancingbacon: thanks Google for taking me to Wikipedia:

    Doughnut (driving)

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A doughnut or donut is a maneuver performed while driving a vehicle. Performing this maneuver entails rotating the rear or front of the vehicle around the opposite set of wheels in a continuous motion, creating (ideally) a circular skid-mark pattern of rubber on a roadway and possibly even causing the tires to emit smoke from friction.[1]

Other terms used for describing this maneuver include "spinning sedys / doing a sedy", "making cookies / cutting cookies", "cyclone","diffing", or "spinning brodies".[citation needed]

Doughnuts are more easily performed on wet and frozen surfaces (ice and snow), as well as on loose surfaces, such as dirt. When performed in the snow, it is more often done to have fun than it is to make an earnest attempt at creating the circular skid mark pattern.[citation needed] In Australia, doughnuts performed in dust or mud are colloquially referred to as "circle work".

Performing the doughnut maneuver can be hazardous. Strain is placed on the vehicle's suspension and drivetrain, which may result in mechanical breakdown with loss of control. Tires are also subject to severe wear which may result in a sudden loss of pressure or blowout.[citation needed]. In snow, however, the strain placed on the vehicle is much less. Hence, rally drivers prefer to learn car control in such situations.

Anyway back on topic, Sorry to here about the problem you ran into. Hopefully its nothing to bad.

Didn't think to check a fuse, good call.
Also what I thought, if a hose blew off/cracked/etc the reservoir would be empty. Wonder if its possible to "burp" fluid without destroying what I'm guessing are the seals on the pump itself?

The pump may be perfectly fine and fluid shot out a weak spot on the line from added pressure. A quick way to find the leak would be to have someone turn the wheel while youre looking in the engine bay. Just be mindful that it doesn't spray into your face.

You ran pump across relief and aireated the fluid I think. Top up reservoir with appropriate fluid and cycle the steering while checking for leaks.

This. I'm of the opinion that every new driver in snowy environments should find a open parking lot and play in the snow to learn how the vehicle feels and reacts. No if I could just get the police to agree with me.

I always stay in 2 wheel, use 4 to get me out of the mess.

Now the real question, any videos?
