This is just an FYI for anyone who's had similar problems - it's been solved now. For the record, this happened to a 2012 Tacoma SR5 with 75000 miles.

I was driving down the road when suddenly the Battery light came on. So I went to the store and replaced the battery right away... I needed to anyway since it is approaching 5 years old and winter cold is just starting.

The next day, the battery light came on again... I thought it was odd since I just replaced the battery, but everything else was fine, so I kept driving. A few miles down the road the traction control light, brake light, all came on, and the radio was flickering on and off. It wouldn't go over 2500 RPM and wouldn't shift... very odd. SO, I pulled over and the truck shut off.. I tried starting it and all it did was click, like a dead battery... I kept trying over the course of 5 minutes and eventually it started like normal... no battery light or any other warning light...everything was normal... obviously something electrical was wrong.

I drove it to the shop, they diagnosed it as an alternator issue and said the new battery was only outputting 12 volts.

Replaced the alternator, now it's all back to normal. Hope this helps someone in the future.
