I haven't driven my 96 taco in about a week and it has been 20-30f these last few days. Pulled out of the drive way and had 1st gear keep popping out on me. Happened a few more times until the truck warmed up. Thought it was something more serious, but the first article I found on google seems to suggest it is a small part that costs about $20 and shouldn't take more than an hour or two to replace. I only have ~126k miles, so find it odd that this would be worn out already (sometimes I wonder if the mileage is accurate on my truck...) but alas, I figure I'll go ahead and replace it if I keep having pop out issues.

I couldn't find anything on TW, but that doesn't mean it hasn't been mentioned before. I thought it was funny the first link on google was a 96 tacoma having the same issue. :)

Toytec coilovers. Height adjustable Bilstein's. 265/75/16 MT. TRD wheels. Rebuilt r150f. Marlin clutch kit. All kinds of new parts...
go to marlincrawler.com and get the shifter seat and bushing kit. Better than stock and inexpensive. Easy to replace.

Hopefully it's just this. If you've never changed the oil, you might as well change it now.

I had the same thing happen to me and found that same instructable.

I haven't tried it yet and the problem has largely gone away for me but it's on my list of things to do one of these days. If you do it, please update on the level of ease. I'd like to do this myself but i'm not really mechanically inclined.

Had this happen to me once, I was really confused and figured I must have accidentally bumped it out of gear. Hasn't happened again but good to know it's just a small part that might need replacing.

Also, if you find somewhere online to get a shifter cap please post. I can't seem to find one that fits our trucks. I drive a 98 but it's the same part.

I switched to mt90 here about 3 weeks ago, the oil I took out looked brand new (prob off the shelf autozone) though but just wanted to do some preventative maintenance since I just got the truck recently.

When I picked up my 2000 2X4 Tacoma a year ago with 75k it shifted horrible. I changed the trans fluid with M1 75w90 and I could tell that when it was cold that it was worse. Picked up the shifter bushing at Marlin Crawler and that solved 95% of the problems. I also replaced the M1 with Redline MT90 and that made a huge difference for me when it's below 50 degrees.

Also the bushing seat that came out was soft compared to the MC seat which is hard nylon, it keeps the shifter rigid to engage the gears.

So thinking my syncros were shot I bought a used tranny off a friend that had a parts truck and a new clutch kit. I was dragging me feet on the swap for the last 5 months, now I'm glad I didn't do it. After reading this post and the article I replaced these parts and it seams to have fixed my problem. Parts were closer to $60 at the local dealer. Best part, my brother's friend just bought an automatic 4rner and wants to swap to stick so I'm selling him my extra tranny and clutch for $60 more than I paid, paying for my fix. Thanks for posting this op!
