I think Toyotas challenge is bringing a diesel to the market that actually works. They will take a 5 or 6 cyl diesel they already make and strap all the BS EPA stuff like DEP and DPF and see if they can make it work.

Many diesels are failing and a lot of them that don't require emissions in their counties or states are doing exhaust bypasses.

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed the Ford Ranger will be here in 2019 and the Bronco in 2020.

I highly doubt they will go through the effort of bringing a diesel to US market, when the Tacoma is outselling it competitors by a huge margin, with no
rebates or incentives, running the plant at capacity, coupled with the unfriendly environment the EPA is making around diesel powertrains. All one has to do
is look a VW, who will not be bringing another diesel to the US market.

If a turbo diesel Taco was offered today I wonder how many "on the fence" buyers would take the plunge? I'd be headed down to test drive one ASAP, I know that.

No I haven't, but have talked to new owners and messaged a guy with the same trailer I tow, he said the 6 speed is useless, the truck spends most of the time in 3rd and 4th when hitched.

Only problem with that is their price points start to reach levels of "Wait, why am I considering a mid-size again?"

Since 5th and 6th are overdrive gears, that makes sense.

It's true I've towed a 2500lb a-frame popup camper here in AZ to the high country (from 1500ft elev to 6500ft+) and she stays pegged in 3rd or 4th gear on many of the grades. I averaged about 13-14mpg IIRC. BTW you're supposed to stay out of the Overdrive gears when towing on the auto trans by using the "S" mode shift limiter and ECT helps with the "off the line" gitty up but yeah she screams like a leaf blower on the grades with a fairly light load. Not sure how anyone would tow 4000 or 5000lbs up a grade. It would be way too much for this little thing to handle.

Before the VW scandal, VW was looking at bringing the VW Amarok to Canada, 2.0TDI. Canada buys a lot of Jetta TDI's.

    Lotsa shit.
Everyone knows Toyota has numerous Diesel engines that would work in these trucks, i.e. Hilux and others. It's just with all of the emissions controls and all of that garbage blocking it, it might not be feasible for them to get one in a Tacoma for a relatively cheap price. Toyota really knows what they are doing and they wouldn't put something in or on something with their name on it that they would not be proud to sell to the customer. The markup, especially since they are really cracking down in the diesel segment since the whole Volkswagen issue would just be insane for these engines, just my 2¢

Smaller sized truck is more practical, just want more punch for the package if ya catch my drift. Many don't want or need a full size.
