USB/aux in center console

Has anyone run a USB or aux to the center console?

I don't need power in there (already has the 12v), but want to be able to connect my iPod to the stereo and leave it in there

I guess I'm in the shrinking minority now, but I still have my 160gb iPod classic, and I like to just leave it in the truck and connected. It'd be nice to have it in the center console to avoid wires everywhere....

I assume it shouldnt be too hard cause there's already power rub there, so there should be a cableway. Not sure if the head unit has any more input spots? Or if you'd have to disconnect the ones on the dash and run extensions. I wouldn't bother in that senerio

 

Lift the "rug" at the bottom of the center console cubby and you will see a couple of holes. I ran my Mobius dashcam power (USB) and AVITY-01 Lightning-HDMI cable through them. If you feed the cables down from the center console cubby they tuck up nicely along the center console to the dash without having to remove anything.

 

I was thinking of running the USB and AUX to the glovebox to free up a switch location... I don't use it, so why not! Subscribing!

 

I was thinking the same thing. I still use an iPod too and would like relocate the USB/AUX in the glove or console area.

if all you're using is the USB and not the aux just take it out, buy one of those USB extension cables, plug it in (add tape to keep it in) and tuck it behind the dash and run the wire to the centre console like you want.

Did the same on my jetta just reverse sorta. I didn't want it in the centre console I wanted it in the glovebox so moved it to there.
I'll probably do the same just to free up a switch spot

 

Not using the AUX right now, but I might use it in the future, so I don't want to disable it altogether. I think I may just move the connector, as is, to inside the glove box.

 

look around enough you can likely find extensions for the 3.5mm jack too to run to the centre.

Yeah, my thoughts were to put the stock connector in the glove box.... so the glove box will have USB/AUX, and run an extension off the USB behind the connector to the console. The JBL head unit can support 2 USB devices at a time!

How's the OP's ipod audio get to the stereo USB connection using that?

 

Maybe I misunderstand, what I do is run my iPod inside my console connected to the USB and every time I crank up my truck it automatically connects via Bluetooth

 

Pretty sure the OP's 160GB ipod classic doesn't have bluetooth...

 

Shout out to other iPod classic owners! I still use my 160GB model and my even older 80GB 5th gen iPod video too. It's permanently stationed in the truck under the USB port. Though I do take it out to sync it or for using it as an iPod, you know, with headphones as the battery is still in good shape.



I wouldn't mind moving it to the glovebox, less visible items for people to steal. Not that an old iPod is really worth that much, haha. Center console is full of stuff and has a divider in it anyway but I do keep a 12V to USB plug in there for charging my phone, just not enough space for an iPod.

In my Tundra it was plugged into the aux input (3.5mm) 24/7 other than to charge it once a week. It actually ran on battery power the whole time I'd be driving till I swapped the head unit for one with BT/USB. The darn thing goes for ages on a charge.

On a sidenote to the OP. Does your classic (7th gen I assume?) work right with the Entune software? By that I mean if you go to an album and click a song does it actually play that song? Mine won't play the first song when I tap on it and instead picks another one off the album and the title displayed is wrong, but it I change the track then go back it's right. Drove me nuts on my Classic, but it works 100% with my 5th gen iPod. Thus why my Classic isn't in the truck.

 

Ha, no... It doesn't. Plus I don't think the audio quality over Bluetooth is the best

 

Is it just jbls that can support a second usb?

 

I haven't even hooked it up in the new truck yet. But on the second gen with entune, the only issue I has was with shuffle. It did the same kind of think where if I shuffle alled, the first song would show differently on the display and plat something random. But the next track would be correct, and if I went back to the first track, would play what the first song was supposed to be

 

I did this at first, but 160 gig iPod has a lot more music than what the USB will hold.

Have you checked the prices of the classic, I was going to get another a few weeks ago, not happen after I saw the prices.
Yes my classic does that as well, when it works.

 

That's what I do as well. One of those flashdrives that are only as big as your thumb nail so it doesn't stick out to far.
