I actually bought my 2008 prerunner because it had so little new-fangled technology on it. I've since discovered that by not getting the 4X4, I might have gone a bridge too far with the old KISS principle. But it looks like I'm willing to spend hours of research and thousands of dollars on lockers and other ways of improving traction, rather than give up on what I'm still hoping will be a marriage for life.

I don't know what it is like going from a 06 to a 16 but from a 91 4 Runner to a 16 Taco was like waking up after a 50 year comma. Love my 16. Great over winter on snow tires and 4WD. My daily run around truck. Next month I will be chasing Salmon on the Kitimat so we shall see how she is in the mud. Make the trade if you want a new truck and can afford it. If not you got 10 more years left in your Taco or more.

Yes but yours was 12 years newer. Saw my old truck on the HWY today, parked with the hood up. Not a good sign.

I had a 06 trd sport long bed, that truck felt like it had more power. But I don't regret my 16 at all, night and day on the inside. So much more cush.

Now I went from a 1997 sr5 4x4 3.4 5 speed manual, into my 3rd Gen 3.5 automatic trd or 4x4. And I'm in love, for me, plenty of power, nice torque, comfort and decent mileage even on a 3"lift with 285/75r16s. My buddy has a 14 4runner and his torque low is much more aggressive and responsive, but I can hit my ect button, and I feel equal. Though I am coming from a 97, I am very satisfied with this model.

    Hope this helps.

I still have a 1985 SR5. Thing has been good to me. I learned to drive on it in 2006, parents owned it before that. Its been the mos reliable vehicle I have owned. Love that little truck. The 2016, im enjoying the vehicle.... However, I will NEVER ever EVER EVER buy from the dealer i purchased it at from again. I like the car features that are in it, which is why i waited for the 16 instead of buying a 15 but ended up with a Camry for work purposes down south, moved to Maryland and wanted a truck.... I was trying to wait for a 2017, however, thanks to a drunk driver I totaled my 2016 Camry with 8000 miles on the clock.

I went from a 2006 purchased in 2005 with 110k for miles and couldn't be happier. Faster, 2-3 mpg better on same drive, better handling, more tech; what's not to like.

My dad has a '96 Tacoma and he bought me a 2016 Sport for my 16th birthday back in March. Mine puts his to shame so bad it isn't even funny. It's cool how over 20 years things can upgrade so much. I would highly recommend the new Tacomas, to me everything about them is great, and they are freaking awesome!

A bit vague on the info here for meaningful comparisons. What's wrong with the old one, or what needs are not being met?

If the old truck runs well, does what you need it to, ie still meets your needs, I'd keep rolling.

You might consider something in between. There are low to mid mileage 2nd gens around for 30%, or more, less than a new one.

The old one just doesn't have all of the stuff the new one has. (Plus his is a standard and I like automatics) Although they might run about the same, I would rather have a new one just for all of the awesome features and the luxury it beholds. Although this is also an opinion, so you might have a different outlook. The old one is about to roll over to 300k and still runs great, but here is how I look at it: you only live once on earth, and if you like the new ones then go for it. Also, my dads only has 190 horsepower while mine has 278 horsepower which is a pretty good leap.

Also, if you try to find a 2nd gen with few miles and is in good condition, you're still looking at a lot of money. Originally, my dad was going to get me around a 2010, but one around here with low mileage was like $28k-29k. So we decided heck for a few more thousand you could buy a brand new one off the lot. So we started looking into the 2015 ('16s weren't out yet) and one day I randomly googled the 2016 Tacoma and I was hooked on it. The all around redesign, the technology advances, the more aggressive look, etc. So patiently I waited and got a 2016 and couldn't have made a better choice. I got the premium tech package w/ JBL and love it. All of the technology such as the blind spot monitoring, rear traffic alert, sunroof, qi wireless charging, and most importantly the upgraded sound system is awesome and I don't think I could have another vehicle that didn't have it. The all new Tacoma (in my opinion) is the best midsize truck on the lot, there isn't anything about it that I don't like

I have a 2013 Baja, essentially an earlier version of the 17 TRD Pro. My 2013 is a MT access cab. Those no longer exist. If you want MT you have to get a crew cab, and my mountain bikes won't fit into a 5 foot bed easily. I realize that manual trans are not what Americans want, so I'll just drive my Baja until it dies. I'm an archaeologist and use my truck off-road in many situations and have found a manual trans to be a better fit for the kind of situations I find myself in often. I don't want to start the tired fight about transmissions. It just works for me. That being said, it would be nice to have heated seats in the winter in New Mexico and navigation.
