Why would a bent frame total it, Damage has to exceed something like 75 or 80 percent of the value of the truck.

 

It's not like the front end is pushed all the way to the engine,most of the damage is plastic with the exception of the hood which will easily be bent like that with a little bit of force on the front of it.Ive seen hoods pretty much buckle in half with someone trying to shut it with the hood prop still in.

do you know how expensive frame repairs can be? they add up quick.
Frame damage is usually a write off.

Not only does it have to be fixed but still has to meet structural integrity. A lot of insurance companies won't waste time with it as it can be a tough, and expensive call

 

Go pro when traveling goes a long way in instances like that

 

Well aware, in Post #8 I explained the amount of Frame damage my 2000 sustained and there was never a second of questioning the repair, it was the fully boxed section of the frame so they had to weld big pullers to it and heat it up in order to pull it back into place.

 

Most vehicles are made to crumple for a reason, absorb all the energy of the crash.
Everyone seems to think a vehicle should take a hit and be fine...they're designed to take all that impact and not put it on the occupants.
I used to do all the electrical maintenance for two body shops that are registered as preferred for all the majors, talked to the guys all the time, little things you'd never think are a write off are quick to be a write off.

The airbags not going off is the only reason why I think it might not be totalled.

might not take as much. no airbags are a huge plus side to maybe not be totalled.
unless its different in the US but its not 80% damage here in Canada, its equivalent repairs of 70% of vehicle cost and its a write off.
Airbags are bloody expensive.

 

The front section of the frame is fully boxed and then it turns into C Channel. I am not sure of the exact percentage, thought it was like 75-80 but you might be right at 70.

It was the point in traffic where it gets clear for about 200yd and everyone speeds up above 10-15mph.

Whatever the reasoning for the guy hitting the brakes, is beyond me. Regardless, I still hit him, so the ticket was rightfully written.

The guys Acura TL did not fare to well. His rear is totally caved in and both quarters wrinkled up.

It is very concerning that my air bags did not deploy but the Acura's did. My knees jammed into the dash and are very swollen and bruised. My neck and back are hurting like hell, so a trip to intensive care tomorrow may be in order, just to get checked out.

Insurance will be called tomorrow, and I'll begin the process of dealing with them. I will definately push to have the frame checked to make sure it is within spec. Also, the damn doors won't open due to the fenders being pushed back into them. I had to crawl out of the back.

 

I hear you can get a paint job for $500 bucks. Sounds like a deal!

 

Remarkable the transfer of energy. People forget that just because the front is damaged, that impact/ energy is transfered throughout the entire vehicle. Hell his bed could be out of whack now..

 

This isn't the first time we've heard of airbags not deploying on the 3rd gen I don't think. Strange

Get a good dashcam. If the driver really did slam on their brakes for no reason, you have a fighting chance.

 

New hood, bumper, grill and radiator. Possible fenders on both sides as well as new headlights. Make sure they check your A/C as well. Probably around $6k in damage.

The main issue is if you have any damage to the frame which means more $$$$. If so, trade it in immediately after it's fixed (if you can afford it). It can take a couple of months before it shows up on the CarFax vehicle history report. Some dealers ask if it's been in accident. Some don't. Either way, you'll get to see what type of value remains.
