Dipsticks are the past. If you think they did it to save $100 you might want to do more research on sealed transmissions.

Still no reason to not add a dipstick. They can call it what they want, but if they're not filling them correctly from the factory AND not including a dipstick, there is a major issue.

Its a sealed transmission, thats the reason. Add a dipstick, no more seal..Any Tacoma that as low transmission fluid is exceptional as I said, 1%

Also, the fact that these aisin transmissions are pretty sensitive to fluid level makes it even worse.

Exactly, give me a dipstick and call mine unsealed and I'd be happy!

Funny how a man pays nearly $40,000 for a truck and wants to take care of it... only to have someone else criticize his choice to do so. Funny part is, that I actually had low trans fluid, dry u joints, and loose u joint bolts... heard about all these issues on this site after I had already bought my truck. Never would have thought it would happen that way, but surprise, surprise! Another company that could give a damn about you after you sign on the dotted line! And to think I paid a $699 fee to the dealer service dept to inspect my truck prior to delivery... allegedly ensuring that it was good to go. I don't trust any of those dipshit "Techs" to wipe their own ass, let alone service my truck. Oh but wait, you are one of those and you know everything right? Just like those morons who told my wife she needed new brakes after 41,000 miles on a new vehicle... not covered under warranty but we can hook you up for $2,300 in parts and labor. Had it fixed for $160 by a local shop that wasn't trying to screw her over. Since I work out of town I could not check anything myself so I sent her to a guy I had used before myself. Even had her taken to work and dropped vehicle off to her when done! Toyota won't do that for anyone unless you have them bent over a lawsuit barrel!
OP if you feel like you need to look after your own truck then do it! Whatever makes you happy and gives you peace of mind do it!

If you have ever owned or worked on a BMW you will know that the oil dipstick being phased out isn't far off.

I can understand his apprehension having owned 2 Honda Civics (both sold), an Acura TSX (just sold), a Honda CRV and BMW X3. I could check everything in a matter of minutes and rectify the situation quickly on the Honda based cars. Where as the BMW I am trusting a sensor and hoping that everything is calibrated correctly.

It's a pain in the ass. same thing with our audi. it's a 2013, with no oil dipstick. you monitor it on the radio thing. problem is it's either max/min and you don't know what min is. Here's the kicker. when you open the hood, you can't check oil level right away. So...you add a little oil, turn the car on, let it idle, wait for monitor to register and if you didn't do it right you repeat again. It's fun. wouldn't be an issue if the turbos didn't use up oil. but it burns through about 1/2 bottle every 5000 miles.

That dude is a tool, he contributes little here besides attacking anyone who says anything negative about a 3rd gen with ancedotal evidence or conjecture. It's not worth the energy trying to rationalize with him as many of us here have come to realize.

Just did my 500 mile oil change and got a BlackStone report as I will do for the next three oil changes and every year after that. My next oil change will be around 3k miles, then every 5k miles for the life of the engine.

Don't joke. Our Audi, MY 2013 didn't come with an oil dipstick. Think they got rid of them around 2011 or 2012. It's a pain in the ass every time I change the oil. I never really know if I overfill or not. So, I put in a little under the capacity, drive it around and recheck. sometimes I'm good, sometimes I have to add more.

It DOES come with a transmission dipstick. But NO oil dipstick. go figure. At least when I change the transmission fluid every 40/50k (probably every 6-7 years) , I'll know if I filled correctly. Assuming the temperature is in the correct range.

OP, be careful of the fill. I use a mity vac and it only pulled out 4.5 quarts. I opened the drain and only got about 1/2 quart more. Lost less than 1/4 quart taking the filter off. So I only put 5 quarts in first. After I ran it, it was middling on the stick so put in an additional 1/2 quart and it was full. i wouldn't put in 6.xx quarts right at the first go.

I just did my oil change yesterday. Got the truck up to temp., drained the oil.

I read it takes 6.2 quarts. So I put in 6 quarts. I check the dip stick and it looks a little high. How is this possible? Should I drain some out?

Yes, get it a touch below the "F" Mark. You're not able to brain 100% of the oil while doing a change is the reason it is showing a bit high.

Thanks for the info LJA. Briank418: Don't add all the oil at one time, do maybe 5 qts then check oil levels as you add the rest. Remember to give some time for oil to reach and settle in oil pan.

Honestly I think oil changes are the cheapest insurance ever if you intend to keep your vehicle for the long term. $30 per oil change for roughly 10000 miles? Is that really a lot when you consider I paid damn near $50000 Canadian after all my tinkering.

Just because the oil is dirty does not mean its not working properly. Todays oils are engineered for extended drain intervals. Just use a quality oil and follow recommended drain cycles and you will have no oil related issues. If you operate in extremely harsh environments with lots of short trips, towing, etc... a little more frequent might be ok, but still not necessary. And if you do get an oil analysis the main number you need to be concerned with is the TBN(total base number). This tells you how well you oil is holding up over its lifespan. I notice it was missing in the report posted above. And wath the copper number It goes up your getting into the bearing. Silicone and sodium go up, head gasket issues are possible.
