How do people camp out of a double cab short box ?

This is exactly what i would like to do but with a sofftopper. Anyone aware of something like this?

 

Yea man, I used to have a complete LT taco but as I get older I'd rather just have a long travel side x side that I can easily maintain and tow around.

 

We (2 tweens and us grownups) ground tent camped for 4 or 5 years until the second summer back to back that we woke up on the rocks when 2 separate Coleman queen air mattresses sprung leaks. That really was the final straw, and we bought a tent trailer. We love that thing, it's comfortable and we've been across the Western US several times in it, but it's big, heavy and you are pretty much limited to car campgrounds.
My latest dream is to minimize, be self contained and get a roof top tent, which won't prevent us from driving up narrow fire roads to more remote camping spots, but still have the comfort of a 3" foam mattress. I think the 3 main things that make RTTs appealing to me are: 1. Quick setup - your bedding stays in it. 2. Comfortable 3. Go anywhere the vehicle can go (compared to most trailers). THAT is why I'm opting for a RTT instead of a ground tent.

My challenge now is to figure out mounting. I no longer have the shell in the photo.

In a perfect world, I would be able to mount it to my lumber rack, but it would have to go up on the rails, not the cross bars. The rails are a little too high, and the annex and ladder would not quite reach the ground, or at least the ladder would not be at enough of an angle. I'd also like to travel with the RTT below cab height for fuel economy and wind noise, and figure out a way to pivot it up to rack height when setting up. I could cut the side rails off the lumber rack so the RTT can mount on the cross bar, but I can't see doing that to an expensive rack. Buying a bed RTT rack would be an option, but one more thing to install and store. Any ideas? .

I'm keeping it real, I throw a foam pad and a coleman sleeping bag in the back of a regular cab pickup with a used camper shell and I sleep like a fucking king in it.

that's great in all but the OP was specifically looking for ideas from people with short beds that camp in the backs of their trucks. eventually I plan on getting a shell for the back of my short bed for camping purposes but like some of the others I think I will also get one of those rooftop tents to go on top of it for the wife and I because the bed will be way to short for me.

 

Yeah the short bed would make sleeping a little cramped - full fetal diagonal in the bed might be the only option then :-/ (J/k). I'd try a RTT if I wasn't able to sleep in the bed for sure.

I wish I still had my 2014 AC with the long bed but unfortunately I got rid of that well before I got this truck and its what I have now so I just have to learn to live with what I have. I've used this truck to move from one house to another already and the bed extender was extremely helpful but yes the long bed would have been better.

Try folding down the rear seat and lay down in there. If you only need space for one.
