What Have You Done To Your 2nd Gen Tacoma Today?

Washed it. Couldn't take it anymore.

You can buy the joystick off of Amazon for about $15. I got the switches off of ebay. I took apart the joy stick and pulled out all of the wires and the round buttons and replaced them with the ones in the link. One of these days I'll take it apart and solder wires so I can run them to a light of some kind.

 

The "auto lsd" is a completely open diff. It's just an electronic braking thing that does the LSD function.

Pre 09 used a mechanical LSD in some models.

 

Do you have a part number for that bad boy? I want to order one.

 

i haven't heard of someone doing this before. if everything fits i don't see why you couldn't do it, but i wouldn't. two systems attempting to complete the same task will almost always interfere with each other

one possibility. i'd stick to the e-locker. its already there (so no additional funding) and does the same thing. if used correctly (not engaged or disengaged while smashing the throttle) it should last the life of the truck

you may want to look into the abs kill switch and locker anytime mod. but be aware, both of these mods have their downsides. the abs kill switch kills EVERYTHING, which is good if you want to do so, but probably not a good idea to drive around every day with your stability control, abs, auto lsd... everything.... completely off. the locker mod bypasses the safeties and lets you engage the locker at ANY time. some people have done secondary switches as a safety so they don't engage the locker while driving down the interstate (locker=poof )

lsd would give you better traction on the road. one wheel spin sucks, but on pavement a locked rear is even worse (that is, if you are NOT trying to have fun ). if off-road and the wheels are spinning, stop them, lock it up, off you go

i think he's talking about tapping the traction button to step up the auto lsd. honestly, that really doesn't do much though based on my experience messing around with it

Thanks for the feedback. I already have the ABS kill switch mod done, but only use it when brake lockup might be preferred - deep snow, certain off road maneuvers, etc. I totally agree that killing all of the stability and traction control functions during regular driving might be a bad idea. Again, I am not looking to lock my rear end for regular driving. I just don't like the one-wheel-drive performance of the open diff, and don't feel that the auto-LSD does a good job of simulating a true LS. There has to be a truck out there somewhere in history that had both a true mechanical limited slip diff and the ability to lock when the driver chooses to via a switch or whatever. That's what I am trying to reproduce.

Current state:
- Open diff with one-wheel-drive performance under everyday 2-hi conditions
- Auto-LSD when you prefer limited slip performance in 2-hi or 4-hi, but doesn't work well
- E-locker for off road 4-lo situations

Desired Future State:
- Mechanical LS diff
- disabled auto-LSD switch to avoid competing LS systems. Might have to lose ATRAC as well.
- E-locker for off road 4-lo situations

On another subject, are there any LS options for the front diff - not a locker, but a true mechanical limited slip?

EDIT: There seems to be more than one locker anytime mod method. Any thoughts (and links) regarding the best way to do it?

Ordered me a winch finally! I got the one on the right, but for anyone interested they are doing a sale on the steel cable one...

 

A-TRAC (only engaged in 4-Low, under 3 mph).... air locker... there may be something else out there for the front but not that i know of
