Seems to be a common problem

I've been back and forth to dealer like 15 times in 1 year for this truck. I still love it but toyota left a sour taste in my mouth lol

On my 2nd gen there was a splined section of driveshaft that expands and contracts to account for the axle wrap under acceleration or braking. The male splines were coated with a plastic (nylon?) to counteract any binding, Unfortunately for me, it lost its effect well after my warranty expired and I'd get a clunk every time I came to a stop. A temporary solution was to grease the splines but that only lasted 3 months +/- and being that there's no grease port it was an hours worth of work each time.

Seems like an odd thing, but check to make sure you have enough transmission fluid. The factory might have not filled it completely. This will cause the transmission to not fully downshift in time when you come to a complete stop. Thus, the bump from behind.

I'm going to stop posting.. After I said I hadn't felt it, it happened twice. Cold morning, more of a sudden stop than a gradual.. Felt like it was in the rear of the truck.

I got the same bump/clunk/thump of varying intensity whenever I came to a stop or slowing down fast. I played around with everything. Full gas tank, 1/2 gas, almost empty. almost empty tank with 40 lbs right over the gas tank. sudden stop, slow stop. sudden stop going fast, sudden stop going slow. Didn't really seem to matter but I noticed it almost all the time.

then in the beginning of December, I wasreading the manual again for fill types/etc for something else (forget what I was looking for), I saw that the rears should be no moly grease. So...purged the valvoline synthetic moly I had in the rear shafts with lucas red N tacky (only NGLI 2 with no moly I have around me). I needed a new grease gun anyway. Figured I'd keep the valvoline in the grease gun for the few applications I need moly for. I Wasn't even thinking about the clunk when I purged and refilled; I was thinking more about getting the right lube in. In fact, it kept clunking right after I did it so I didn't even think about it.

It's been about 600 miles since then and I noticed about 4 weeks ago that I haven't heard the clunk. May be that the moly causes more slide than spin/roll?
So, I purged the red N Tacky again just to get whatever moly might have been left and refilled it. still haven't heard it. i've gone through 3 snow storms, 15+ days below freezing and it hasn't made the noise. Maybe that solved it. who knows. I'm still skeptical. I don't think something so annoying would go away with something so simple.

Now if I can just get the damn howling from the rear to go away, I'll be a happy man.

I've noticed something like this too. Mine happens when I am stopped for a few seconds or maybe slightly rolling forward while braking at a stoplight or something. There is a little lurch forward. First few times I looked in my rearview to see if someone bumper tapped me. Is this like what you guys have experienced?

No I've heard of people mention this. I've haven' had this...yet. Mine was only a clunk when coming to a stop or stopping.

Have you seen any threads on it? I don't even know how to approach searching for it but would be curious to see if anyone has advice. I don't want to make too many enemies by duplicating something out there.

Does it occur when the compressor kicks in. If so normal. Even with the perfect 2nd gens

Unfortunately no. If keeping in theme with the time difference between Rev 0 and Rev 1, 4 months or so time in between revisions. Rev 1 was 11/15 so I wouldn't expect anything until at least March.

I get the lurch or whatever you wanna call it on a rare quick braking only situation. Could be many things that would cause that, low trans fluid, diff slip, u-joints, etc etc... Compessor kick in would only affect you at a dead stop imo but who knows. The salesman will tell you those lies. Personally I think the 3rd gen is the best ever but we all just need to patient for the software upgrades. This is one high tech Toyota that needs more refinement that they should have done at the release. The gas pedal is a lil sloppy as many have stated but I drive with 2 feet and always have pressure on the right pedal. The Tsb flash I got on Dec 27th was 0077-16 and ATF was a quart low as I predicted and did improve the 1-2 and 3-4 nicely. But did experience a quick stopping bump once, this tacoma is definitely a new breed and does at times require driver talent over what a vehicle should force one to do, but I love my sexy white bitch Lexus Taco!
