Forgot to Re-tighten

So, forgot to re-tighten after however many miles, nuts backed down U-Bolts slightly and are crooked.
Should I just be good to get new nuts and re-do the bolts?

You should not work on your own truck if you are that careless. You are putting yourself, and more importantly the public, at risk.

 

Good grief man, replace all that hardware and torque them down.

 

How does that happen? Did you take a break and just forget about it? I've been careless before, but not with something like u-bolts.

Checked the next day after a ~25 mile drive and little offroad, everything was still tight. I don't understand how nuts got past 2 inches if thread, though.

 

I don't think anyone here is looking to embarrass you. I think people are letting you know that it is not safe and there was potential to do harm to yourself or others.

 

There's no way the nuts could thread down that far if they were installed properly. Sounds like someone has messed with your truck or you got a ghost roaming around your neighborhood.

Did you use a torque wrench?

 

They actually will come loose, it's recommended to retighten everything you work on after 50 miles.

 

Yes, did torque to spec.

 

Seems like there was some play left, if those came loose.
Double and triple check after tightening after you drive a bit.
Shops that change wheels will always tell you to retorque after 25 miles.

 

BS if they come loose due to not being torqued and re torqued they WILL thread all the way off of a new u bolt with vibration of normal driving. No corrosion or anything to stop it. Remember U bolts stretch, thus the need to re torque, also the reason you should never re-use u bolts.

 

Must have used a harbor freight torque wrench? In all seriousness, people in here praise cheap tools, but I've been around around many people with different torque wrenches, and I've seen a lot of brand new Harbor freight, craftsman, and other cheap brand that were way off.

 

Torque wrench is my new scapegoat. It was 20 years old with a twist cap that probably has its internals broken.
