haha yea luckily im usually deep in the woods when it happens, but yea its a pain for sure. ive been trying to think up a way to fiberglass over the cables and extend the little cable guide that leer already put in but id still have to figure out how to cover the latching part. gives me something to tinker with over winter.

 

Split a piece of pvc long ways and epoxy to the door it over them.

I think my installer sucked too. these sucker are super sensitive. sometimes one side will randomly pop open. is the back glass tough to close on yours? like they almost put lifters that were too strong? mine compared to my brother in-laws is ridiculous. if youre not watching out, mine could literally bust your lip open lol.

 

No mine goes down easy, but I'm a lifter so I could be the target market
But when I painted it I had to take the whole back window off with the hinges and when I put it back I learned that making sure those hinges alighn well is important.
Also (I just fixed this) when I would turn the latch to open it only one side would release, then when I went to shut only one side would click in. Easy fix though, just took a torx bit and loosened the tension holder, then pulled slightly tighter and then re tightened the holder, now it works great. (Similar to working in a bikes brake)

 

I love this area. Was just out that way camping North of the park in early November. Tons of BLM land with lots of great camping spots outside the park if you take a right before heading into the park. check out Google Earth and tons of open camping. Also, Do you notice much of a hit on MPG with that hardshell? I am debating on setup. Mid height bed rack or camper shell with RTT on top. Problem is, i won't be able to get in the garage with RTT on if i mount on top of shell but it might make it if I went this route.

 

Yes, I have seen a hit on MPG, but it is hard to pin down to the hardshell as I've changed a bunch of things including tires and suspension at the same time as adding the hardshell. For what it's worth, I would say my MPG dropped by 2-3MPG.

 

So far so good. Have had some strong wind nights and other than some noise, not bad at all. Certainly better than any of the ground tents I've owned.

 

Couple weeks ago at Big Bend NP with my trooper of a wife.

 

Any issues with getting back country use permits? I know some areas are closed due to black bear activity.

 

Not for us, the ones that were closed were the backpacking sites on the outer edges of the chisos basin. We were all over, Glenn springs, black gap, river road etc.

 

Good deal. Those are the usual ones that close for the bears. My son and I are heading that way in March just wanted to make sure. Thanks. How did the Taco do?

 

Fantastic, not a single issue. Spent most of the time in the back country. Wife even got behind the wheel on black gap with me spotting. My trailer hitch took a beating though lol, but got a full OME kit on the way.

 

As in over all...Mileage, ride and suspension function over the unimproved roads loaded down for camping.

@snwcmpr if you have not been to Big Bend it can be pretty rough or it can be like a walk in the park. Erosion there on the roads can happen quickly if they see any rain.

 

To add details I got 18.5 mpg loaded down with jerrys on the roof. Suspension was probably stressed in the rear slightly. But it won't be stock for long.

No hijack. The cap is a Century brand. Have the same one on my 2010 Tacoma Reg Cab. Should be a tag at the rear inside above the door in the center

 

I go out there at least once a year.
Amazing place!
And the most amazing night sky anywhere. You can see tons of shooting stars and satellites every clear night.
My friends that live next to Big Bend, in Study Butte, have a 14" telescope inside their fiberglass observatory....pretty crazy stuff!
Their guest house is about 300 ft. Above Terlingua Creek....about a 260 degree view over the valley.
There are plenty of unimproved roads with signs saying high clearance, 4x4 recommended but many of those you can drive 2x2 Suburu across.
There are a few that for sure are hardcore 4x4 high clearance needed. Just google.
