Back Story, Installed Icon Vehicle Dynamics Extended Travel Coil overs on my 2015 OR at 15,000. Truck is now at 25,000. Icon Tubular Uca's to compliment the coil overs. No hard core wheeling or jumping the truck. Mostly a dd.

The Issue, was rotating my tires the other day and I was looking over my coil over and noticed that there is a large amount of play in the top hat and lower bushing that connects to the lca. I can grab the coil and move the coil assembly about 1 inch left and right. And I can do it with extreme ease. The passenger side does not do this at all. I also noticed that the UCA bushings on the drivers have play in them as well. I feel comfortable saying that after 10,000 miles neither of these 2 should be happening. I also noticed a clunk coming from that drives side suspension with every bump I hit.

I reached out to Icon this morning in hopes of some help from them in regards to a fix or warranty stuff. Has anyone ever had experience with this or something similar?

Circled areas are where the play is. Arrows are the way the coil overs move.

On my 4runner, there were two spacers that needed to be installed in a particular way where the coilover bolts into the LCA, I wonder if it is the same case with the Tacomas.. and if these spacers were installed correctly.

Sounds like an install problem or a wore bushing. Either way, probably not icons' fault?

I know which ones you are referring too. I installed them like the instructions said. with the bigger spacer in the front and smaller in the back. Noted in the picture below. (these are random icon coilovers but have the noted spacers)

Would you describe the movement as freely rotating along a single axis? Or is it sliding along the mounting bolt? If the latter, is the hardware tightened securely?

I followed the instructions provided with the coil overs. and printed the instructions from the icon internet page. And you cant put anything on the internet unless its true. Right? :jerkoff:

If the bushing is worn after 10,000 miles I feel like icon would step up and fix it. or provide me where to buy the replacements.

I would describe it as rotating along a single axis. 1 inch left and right on the axis

So it rotates several degrees? These coilovers, like most high end coilovers, use a spherical bearing in both eyelets. When they're new, the PTFE lining is stiff, but after a while they bed-in and move with greater ease. The bearing itself is stainless steel, and it is a consumable part much like the crappy rubber bushings used in OE shocks and struts. It can be rebuilt, lubricated, cleaned, and reassembled; but it can also wear out at a faster rate if exposed to mag-chloride, road grime, salt, etc.

Sounds like it's largely normal, my Icons have the same thing now, but the bearings were stiff when I first installed them. My Sway-Aways did the same thing.

In regard to the spring being able to move about, I figure that's a function of the longer-than-stock spring used on the coilover. I noticed this with my 2.0 SAW c/o's much more than I do with my 2.5 icons, and on my friends' crawlers with 18" long coilovers, you can push the coil right up against the body of the shock if you try.

yes it does rotate several degrees. Just curious why the drivers side does it and not passenger. And if it can be rebuilt where could i buy the parts. All questions that could be answered by Icon themselves. I appreciate your info sir

I can't find the service kit for that online, I'm sure they'll tell you where to get it.... When they do, would you update us? I'm sure that'll come in handy to know.

You can order the spherical bushings from Icon, possibly from some of the offroad shops as well. Sounds fairly normal, can rotate both sides on my Icons.

Sounds like you might need new lower bearings.

They don't last long in shitty winter weather conditions.

The installation instructions for my ICON ext travel CO's said to put the short spacer on the frontside of the CO and longer spacer on the backside of the CO when you install it onto the LCA. To keep adequate clearance from the axle on 4wd models. Maybe it's different on a 2015 compared to a 2004 like mine.
