    Howsit going everyone,
Just picked up a 2017 tacoma SR5 DCSB 4wd. (recently owned a 99' xtra cab 2nd gen supercharged etc etc and sold it with 83,000 original miles) and I'm already itchy to do some minor modifications so I can get back to fishing.

I've always been a fan of small lift, biggest tires just because I'm not into the Hawaii thing...come on now, we all know of the 12" lifts and 33's or 35's stretched on 16 wide rims lol.

I plan on building function over form again. My main goal is to run 285/75/16s (33s) just so I can make it to fishing spots. This tire size has never done me wrong (and I've always ran Goodyear Kevlar MTRs).

My plan is to run OME 888s with Bilstein 5100's all around, and AAL in the rear, spidertraxx wheel spacers paired with the OEM 16" rims.

However, with this being my first ever brand new truck, I'm not thrilled about doing the CMC just yet. I dont want any major rubbing, but willing to do a few, minor amount of trimming.

I've been researching and driving myself insane before making this thread, but a lot of threads Ive come across either dont state that they rub, or guys are running 285/70/17 tire size with aftermarket wheel setups...which is completely different on the route I plan on going.

    Thanks in advance!

other thing you need to remember is a lot of the guys running 285s saying they don't rub are just mall crawlers usually.

From what I understand and was also confirmed by the shop doing my lift since they had one in already:
if I run a 285 with a 0 offset wheel, at full lock and any suspension articulation I will rub even with a 2.5inch lift.
Not a vicious rub but none the less rubbing.
This is based on running a 285 duratrac.

It will vary depending on tire.

Might want to consider just running a 265 75. see how it performs for you.
usually measures around 31.7inch, a typical 33/12.5/16 actually measures 32.6 roughly if you look on most tire websites. even a 285 70 17 measures 32.75-32.9 depending on tire.

If all you're doing is fishing and not rough hard wheeling, not really sure why a 31/32inch tire won't get you there.

    EDIT:
I ran 33s on my jeep when I had it and it was great, but I didn't daily it so having an E rated tire didn't matter. But dailying the taco, rather not have an E rated and have my already shit MPG shit the bed. Need to find a point in between good for daily and good off road.
I was dead set on getting another set of ST Maxx for the taco but now really considering come spring I'll just get a set of 265 75 17 just so I can keep some MPG.
If it doesn't work off road well then I'll sell em and just eat the MPG loss and get the coopers. or maybe consider a duratrac 285 since you can get them D rated

I have the low range off road 3/1 leveling kit on 285 75 r16 and the truck sits perfect nothing to big but will get you where you need to go!

I really wanna stay away from 32's. Sure it would still get me there, but I like the wider foot print, it definitely shows in the loose stuff.
This Tacoma is not my daily, so I don't really care about 15mpg, my 1st gen taco and 3rd gen runner got that much on 33's if that.

The type of Offroad I'm doing is mainly lava fields, cinder, or gravel/dirt fire roads, and mud. Occasionally when Mauna Kea snows then I would be in snow too.

    Jkwolfe, any rubbing? And pics?

Here are my old rigs. None of them show the how the roads were to the destination, but a 33 is definitely helpful for fishing. I was rocking 32's on the black taco and in the snow the skinny footprint was just crappy, slid all over.

there is a little rubbing on the upper control arms with 285 75 r 16's on stock wheels. I used 1.5 wheel spacers on my stock wheels now theres no rubbing!

As far as rubbing offroad there is a little on big drops where one tire is stuffed in the fender well but nothing really bad.

What brand of wheel spacer did you use? I have rubbing on my front tires when turning into any type of bump. Really irritating

I went to low rangeoffroad.com and got their 1.5 inch spacers another good company is spidertrax but anything that is solid aluminum and made in the US is pretty much all the same!

Yes you will only want to run hubcentric!!! Also make sure you order extended tread lug nuts

How extended are they? I'm already running extended lugnuts for my rims.

Id say you get about 3 or 4 more turns on the nuts. I did not feel safe running the nuts they came with they just were not bitting as much as the extended threads

Nice. I'm digging it so far. Rubbing the plastic or cab mount? And was that at lock to lock only?

I just changed my tires from stock to 265/70/17 Toyo Open Country AT2, I think 265/75/16 would be the same size as my tires, but it gets me around KP pretty good with stock suspension. I did go reckless the last time out when I took off the predator steps and put sliders on and managed to scrape the exhaust pipe under the transfer case pretty good. Our 3rd gens do sit 1" higher than gen2 taco, upgrading the tires gave it about another 1" of lift. I do plan on upgrading the suspension some time down the rode but for now it does its job.
