Is there a better transfer case oil than OEM?

The manual calls for straight weight 75w in the transfer case. I've read about some people using Redline MT90 (which is

75w-90 and what I put in my manual transmission) but are there better options?

I'm not against picking up the OEM stuff, I just want to know what my options are and I found very little information in other threads or other sites.

Any input would be valued.

 

Redline 75w90 is very good stuff and that's what I'll probably be going to once I change mine in the spring, I'm at 23k now. I'll change the front and rear diff's also!

75w-90 will be 75 when it's cold and 90 when it's hot. Am I understanding that right?

In my differentials I usually like running a little thicker than stock but I don't know enough about the inner workings of a transfer case to know if having a slightly thicker lubricant will have any negative impact.

Yes and there is nothing wrong with running 75w90 in your differentials and transfer case! In my opinion Redline and Mobile 1 are the two best out there!

Your welcome man, anytime! Just change it every 30k and you'll be good. Also do a rear differential breather mod if you haven't done one already. It will prevent water from getting into the fluid in your differential. Cost about $20 and well worth it!

I'm looking at switching over to NEO gear oil in my manual transmission and tcase. Anyone have experience?

 

I would do the mod in a heartbeat, but I'm one of the blessed many that has a howling rear differential. Mine is apparently louder than most and the second differential that they installed under warranty is even louder than the first. I want to keep it stock for now just to keep from giving them any kind of excuse to blame it on me.

You and me and any reasonable person would know that a breather modification wouldn't hurt anything, but we also know how Toyota takes a differing opinion.

They've replaced it once already and it made things worse. As much as it bothers me to hear that sound, I don't think it's an immediate cause for concern and I'm sort of waiting out a fix that doesn't involve just rolling the dice on a new differential make in same factory to the same shitty tolerances as the first two. I've made sure to get the sound documented officially so at least they aren't giving me the whole 'could not duplicate' BS.

I may end up having a local shop pull the differential, bench it, and set it up correctly. I hate spending money on something that should be covered under warranty but Toyota refuses to do anything other than swap it out with another unit which hasn't been fixing the problem for me or anyone else with the problem.

 

overkill, if you change out the recommended 30k maintainence. when I got my 2004 I used AMSOIL severe gear oil in all the diffs/transfer and it didn't perform any better than a Mobil1 or generic over the counter 75w90 at the 30k maintainence interval. unless you go extended change intervals the higher priced oils aren't worth paying the extra money IMO

 

Hell if it was me and they already replaced it once, I'd be marching my ass back out to the dealership and make a big scene with the manager in the showroom!!!!

are the 2017s having the same howling issue? I only hear that the majority are 2016 models? having it

 

I think REDLINE makes a specific manual tranny oil in GL4 that a lot of people are using that makes the shifting smoother than the regular GL5 oils, from what ive read here on TW.

 

This is what I switched to in my truck at about 5,000 miles. I'm at 11,000 now. It's good stuff, but I can't honestly say that I've seen a significant different from what was in there before.

Not sure the exact thread type but just measured the pitch and its 0.9. It measures around 3/8" total diameter but here is the two parts you need plus about 6 ft. of 3/8" I.D. Hose!
