    Hey everyone,

This is my first post so I thought I would contribute if possible. I took a long time trying to figure out what exhaust system I wanted to install. I knew I wanted sound more than everything so a cat-back system was the direction I went. Here is a sound clip of the Borla S-Type system installed on my 2016 Tacoma TRD Sport. For best results listen to the clip through headphone, it's pretty true to life if you do.

As you may know Magnaflow has sound clip videos out there on the web, there area a also a couple MBRP and Flowmaster out there as well...but no Borla for the 3rd Gen Tacomas.

Unfortunately I went against my better judgement and bought a Magnaflow system because it was the only one I could actually hear (well) online.

When my system arrived installed it the same day. Immediately i notice the muffler had a significant amount of weld splatter and slag as well a pieces of feed wire stuck on the muffler itself, not anywhere close to the workmanship I expected from a name like Magnaflow. I installed it anyway, simply because I had already take the old system out. The system sounded alright for the first week or so, but from day one there was a significant cabin drone every time the truck down shifted...think vacuum cleaner running in the next room and it keeps passing your door over and over again. It got worse and worse as time went on!

After four weeks I couldn't stand the whirring of the drone any longer and purchased the system I talked myself out of...the Borla S-Type cat-back system. Needless to say the Borla system is miles ahead of the Magnaflow in the quality department as well as the sound. I just wrote off the Magnaflow system as an expensive lesson learned... hopefully you won't have to make the same mistake.

Nothing yet... Bought it with TWO miles on it!!!
It doesn't seem to be overly aggressive in sound (which I think is a good thing). Is there much of a sound change? What about drone inside the cabin? With how often these transmissions shift, drone would become very annoying...
    Thanks for the write up!

If you listen to the clip with headphones or good speakers you can really hear the exhaust note.

There is a significant sound change outside of the truck for sure. It makes the exhaust sound a lot deeper, and after it's broke in properly it even gives you the S-Type growl Borla is known for. It doesn't sound like a tuner car at all... but it also doesn't sound like a V8. As for drone, absolutely no drone at all with this system. Now if you get the Magnaflow system you want to pull your ears out because of the constant shifting and horrible drone.

Put it this way... I have two boys ages 8 and 11 and they think the truck now sounds awesome. They say its more like a "sports car" now. My oldest son (a harsh critic from birth) said "now it doesn't sound mom's blender". For perspective they spent the last 4 years riding around in my F-150 FX4 V8 with a Borla ATAK system installed, so they know what "Boss" is supposed to sound like.

Hope that helps... I'll have more clips soon, my TRD intake comes in today and that should change the sound even more....stay tuned!

I installed my TRD intake last night and man did it make a difference in the over all sound of the Borla exhaust system. Getting on the highway with the pedal mashed the system really comes alive and hits what I can only describe as a rock guitar power cord... one similar to the guitar cord "note" on the intro to Metallica's "Master of Puppets"... not trying to be cheesy, I am just from GenerationX so I figured most people on here could relate.

I will be happy to do a video with sound but would like to get some input on the best way to record the sound in the cab. I only have a iPhone 7+ for recording purposes, but have music equipment available from a friend. Again this is not my forte'... anybody have some best practices to getting a good sound clip for both inside and outside the cab?

Here is the TRD Intake sound at full throttle... you can hear a little exhaust noise as well. I'll upload a drive by sound soon.

Thanks! I just found a garage that will do a 3 run Dyno pull for 80$... so next week I will post what (if any) actual gains were made from installing cat-back exhaust system and the TRD-CAI. Won't be able to do a before exhaust baseline but I should be able to do a stock vs. TRD Intake comparison.

I'm thinking the experiment should look something like:

    Run 1 - Stock Intake
Run 2 - Stock Intake with TRD filter
Run 3 - TRD Intake with TRD filter

It will be good for the TACO community to have actual scientific numbers to debate than just if the trucks sound faster.

My guess is there won't be a difference number wise between the TRD filter (stock setup) vs TRD intake system. But time will tell..

It will be interesting because I have definitely seen an increase in HWY mileage. My normal commute to work averages 20.2 mpg... for the past few days I have got 23.2. So something is going on...

Yeah for sure.. I'm just not sold that the TRD intake produces anything more over the TRD drop in filter. From what I can tell, The stock setup is identical to the TRD intake. The only difference would be the TRD system has a flow accelerator which is a 16 dollar part on Amazon. And of course the TRD logo on the lid. It will be interesting to see the numbers. Either way, thanks for a good thread, looking forward to the numbers.
