Auto here, this almost feels like you got bumped in the back end and it's just that last
    second before fully stopping.

I have that issue as well. Almost like a power surge right at the point before that complete stop, almost as if there is stored energy in the drivetrain that needs to be released somehow.

My auto clunks when rolling to a stop. Feels like driveline slop. I can feel it lurch or surge forward from the clunk. Could also describe like a hard downshift. A lot of folks have this issue. Have seen many threads on it or at least comments on it

Hopefully it's not harming anything long term. But to me, a clunk, is never ok.

No, I'm sure it's not normal nor is it okay. I'm sure there are folks being fed the "its normal" line for a majority of the issues on the tacoma. I'm not bashing the truck, I have one and It's got a myriad of issues that were attempted to be fixed and they were not. Just keep it documented and stay on your dealer to get the repairs or resolution made.

Agreed and yeah love going to a dealer to hear some weird shit is 'by design' or 'normal'.

Man, hope your issues get resolved, if I had many like you're saying, I'd trade it. I just don't
have the time or desire to deal with too much on a new truck and my daily and only vehicle.

They are, there is a process and by principal I'm sticking it out. Corporate has been very understanding as my truck has been at the dealership 5 times since I got it at the end of august. The reality is this, if you approach the dealer, corporate or anyone else with the "you owe me" attitude I can guarantee that you'll most likely get nothing from them. I've been polite, explained my frustrations and wastes of time that these dealer trips have been and they have been understanding.

you guys that do feel it, do you feel it every time you brake? Tried it over
and over again on the way home, happened one time, no wonder some dealers
    can't replicate it. o_O

You guys sure it isn't just normal transmission/rear differential slop? Many trucks do this, often when shifting from park or from fwd to reverse. I also have a manual and it does this. I think it might be more noticeable due the strange and sudden change in engine breaking very near idle. On coast down in the manual, if you leave it in gear until the rpms drop close to 1000RPM, it suddenly loses all engine breaking. Feels like the transmission popped out of gear. This sudden change in torque on the driveshaft is gonna make it slop from one side of the gear backlash to the other.

If you park your truck on level ground and chock the wheels, you should be able to put it in neutral and then get under the truck, grab the driveshaft and rotate back and forth. See if the same clunk is audible from the rear end. If so, that is the source and it is normal in a differential to a certain extent. Some more noticeable than others.

Agree with it being cold. Seems like if I warm the truck for 10 min prior to driving it doesn't happen near as often or at all. Jump in it cold and I have a higher likelihood of it happening for sure.

This is mine too.... Clunk when cold and coming to a stop. I thought maybe rear dif fluid issue? I have no clue what it could be. always when cold and they can never duplicate it when they get it....

    Lol.
    Its the pads shifting.
Once they have a little wear they do this.
Has and does bug the shit out of me.
When i replaced my pads they didnt do it for about 5000. Then back to clunk

No they dont do it all the time but as miles rack the noiser and more often it happens.

I came to the conclusion of it having nothing to do with warm up time, I've warmed mine up for over 10 minutes (yea stupid I know) but still the same

Some people say it's fuel tank: full tank it moves around the baffles? I've tried all variations of fuel and weight in bed, including amount of gas and sand bags in different points in the bed. the fuel thing as worked for some people. Not for mine.

Some people say it's axle wrap. I don't get it when I take off, just when I stop. But depending on road conditions, I do get wheel hop when I take off. Especially loose traction conditions like sand. gravel, snow, and ice.

some people think its the type of grease you put in. Put moly in, and it clunks. put lithium with no moly and it doesn't clunk.

My 2 cents: mine got much better when I purged all the moly out and put in NGLI 2 lithium. I didn't think it would make a difference. I just wanted to put non-moly in since it said no moly grease where I greased the joints, and I made a mistake on the first fill. It's been 2K miles and it hasn't clunked. But it's also been cold and it seems to not clunk as much when it's cold. temperature reduction does change spring constant so maybe I get less axle wrap when it's 20-30 degrees out. Who knows.
I'm putting my money on the grease being coincidental to cold temps.

It also doesn't clunk when there is 1/4 tank or less of gas. So maybe it IS the fuel tank?

Having wheel hop and not having a rake in the bed anymore (bed is now level with the rest of the truck after 8k), I'm guessing mine is axle wrap. It has to be, wheel hop and axle wrap go hand in hand. going to try a cheap 24$ helper spring installed backwards this weekend until the April or May to see if that helps. If it does, I need to decide what to do with the spring pack or go with a ladder traction bar once it warms up.

Anyone know of any good traction bars for the tacoma, can't find one anywhere for a 3rd gen. If i can't find one, i guess I'll go with an add a leaf to see if that helps with axle wrap. or just put full Dakar's in, although i don't like the idea of making the springs stiffer to fight axle wrap. Feel like that will just lead to a snap somewhere in the suspension. and idon't really need to lift the bed any higher.

My 01 tacoma did the same thing for a while, diagnosed as "normal" but that was a pop or lurch on starting back up after hard braking. This is a whole different situation than that, it's a surge.

Has anyone had the issue fixed by having T-SB-0171-16 "Driveline Vibration Under Deceleration" done to their truck?

My 2016 TRD OR DCSB clunks when coming to a stop in cold weather.

Was that done under the T-SB? I'm afraid they might not cover the work since off roads were not listed in the original T-SB.
